Hutcheson Medical Center officials reported another profitable month during the board of directors’ budget and finance meeting Monday.

Farrell Hayes, finance director for the Fort Oglethorpe hospital, highlighted key aspects of the January budget, emphasizing that gross charges for January 2013 were up 33 percent compared to January 2012.

Though there was an increase in operating expenses and supplies compared to last year, a decrease in wages and benefits was represented, Hayes said

“We are happy with our sustained progress,” hospital president and CEO Roger Forgey said in a news release. “Year to date, we are ahead of the budget and on our way to a positive fiscal year.”

Positive earnings for January were $416,691, an improvement over the month’s budget and last year’s reported earning. In January 2012, Hutcheson Medical reported a negative $982,953. Compared to the positive earnings of January 2013, there is a difference of more than $1.3 million between the two months.

“We are about $70,000 ahead of budget year-to-date,” Hayes said at Monday’s meeting.

Total revenue for January was $5,468,810, about $1.5 million more than 2012. Expenses were $5,052,129, an increase of $182,688 over last year.

The average daily census of the hospital is also a key factor in improving the entire system financially, according to the news release. Compared with last year, the daily census has improved, though the emergency room patient volume in December 2012 is still the highest the hospital has seen in many years.

The board of directors approved the financial report.

A closed meeting was held after the financials were read and approved.

The monthly board of directors meeting is Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 6 p.m.
