Carter Brown is seeking to retain his seat as the Walker County clerk of superior court.

Born and raised in LaFayette, Brown has served as the clerk for the past 3½ years; he is running for his second term.

Brown is a graduate of LaFayette High School and received a bachelor’s degree in management from Covenant College. He also served in the Marine Corps, where he was honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant. He was voted “Clerk of the Year” by the 7th District of Superior Court Clerks Association; the same association recently elected him to his third term as chairman.

Brown still has much that he wants to do to improve the Walker County clerk’s office, although he has already revitalized the layout of the office and its accessibility to the public as well as made technological advancements in data and files storage, all while saving the taxpayers over $300,000, he said. He plans, if elected again, to include in his next priorities: streamlining the juror experience and making serving jury duty easier and more comfortable, taking advantage of new technologies in e-filing for courts documents, continuing the computerization of the real estate documents – which formally went “bookless” on January 10, 2011 – and improving customer service to the public.

Brown admits that “these are very challenging goals to reach,” and notes that his biggest obstacles in achieving them would be time and money.

Nonetheless, he is confident that the people of Walker County will see that he has their best interests and the interests of the clerk’s office at heart.

“I believe that voters are smart, and can see true differences in people. The strength of my message is that it does not depend on or focus on what other candidates have done or may do; my campaign is centered in who I am, what I have done previously to serve Walker County, and what I will do in the future to serve Walker County. It always will be.”

Voters who wish to contact Carter Brown may email him at browncarter34@gmail.com or call (423) 504-7067. His campaign website is carterbrownforclerk.com.

My mother was an employee at the Clerks Office here in Walker County for nine years, Leaving just a few months ago. She worked for Bill Mcdaniel, And the current Clerk Carter Brown. She loved her job, And was very good at her job as well..Helping many people in this county, and would go out of her way to help someone. She was a deputy clerk and showed Carter Brown how to run a clerks office, he ha...d no clue how to run the office when he was elected Clerk. At first he was great. And then the true colors began to show in time. He would make them have meetings in the morning, Pray, And at 5:00, they couldnt just go home, they all had to meet and walk out together. He doesnt "trust" his employees, which is why none of them are entitled to keys. He put up glass in front of all the offices, for security purposes..Even though there are deputies at all entrences, armed, and there are medel detectors. It makes it difficult to speak with any of the clerks. He made several ladies that had been there the longest deputy clerks..Maybe because as a deputy clerk you cant run for Clerk of superior court?? He would make them work saturdays (when court wasnt going on) to clean, rearrange, catch up on work. He also shows favor in some employees. One would bring her kids to work often, but when me, my daughter, or my sister would come visit (rarely), my mother was told we werent allowed to be there, that same employee would bring her kids, and the deputies guarding the door would end up baby sitting, that same employee even brought her small child to court one saturday, as she sat with the child, and not by the judge doing her work. Another issue lately is one employee constantly walking around on her cell phone, rules plainly state on cell phones in the court house, and it would be different if it was done descretely, but not for the public to see. Mr. Brown was constantly on my mother, which turned into mental abuse. She would come home crying all the time. Giving her procedure books to read, when in reality and everyone there knows that my mother knew her job like the back of her hand. She didnt need a procedure book to do her job, it was just part of Mr. Brown being in control. My mother was an outstanding employee, and didnt deserve the way she had been treated by Mr. Brown. She quit a few months ago, due to the way she was treated my Mr. Brown, she develpoed anxiety, and high blood pressure. All caused by her work envirement and the way she was being treated by her boss. Mr. Brown wanted to know her affiliation to some other employees at the court house, gave her an envelope, took her to the court room, and told her to fill it out. Wanting to know her affiliation with a select group of people, which stemmed from politics, and seemed a bit illegal. He figured she would fill it out and give it back to him, the front of it read "for your eyes only". But, she isnt crazy. She put them in her purse, and had someone go over them. Realisticly it was bogus. He called her over the weekend wanting to know where the papers were..(scared someone one read them im assuming) Monday he asked her if she had made a decision, because he basically gave her an ultimatum, she packed up her desk and told him she did, and she left. And he has claimed to everyone that she left on good terms, told his employees that, other employees of the court house, even said it on tv. Now thats obviously a lie. She did not leave on good terms, he made her life at work hell. Made her believe he was gonna fire her, FOR NOTHING, she quit her job after nine years, a good job, a job she was invested in, anyone who believes she left on good terms is blind. He is not what he seems, he is controlling, and mentally abusive. I worked for an attorney for a short while, and I would go to the clerks office to file papers, or get papers, and papers that I (or anyone) could get, they would tell me I couldnt have them, but I was told I could go to a web site to retrieve the papers I needed, what if I didnt have access to a computer?? I also was told that certain papers would cost, when the attorney I worked for had gotten them for years, free of charge? It seemed to me that certain people (attorneys) had to go through alot to get help. When I could go to Catoosa County and get any paper I needed and all the help in the world. If you want to make a difference in this community, vote for Kellie Maples. Im all for making this county a better place, with honest people sitting in our elected chairs. This one just so happens to hit close to home, I saw my mom cry to many times over Carter Brown and the way he treated her, what if it was your mom? What if it was your mom that had worked in a place over nine years, a job she enjoyed, and someone took that all away, someone made her cry on a daily basis, and she finally took all she could take and left? You wouldnt be too happy. And you would want something done about, So make a change, Vote for KELLIE MAPLES CLERK OF SUPERIOR COURT.
