The Dalton Civil War 150th Commission will present a symposium on the Confederate Medical Service featuring four noted lecturers from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Nov. 3 in Room 105 of the Brown Center at Dalton State College. The event is free and open to the public.

The Confederate Medical Service played a major role in the Civil War experiences of Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia during 1862-63, according to a media release from the Dalton Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Commemorating the 150th anniversary of these experiences will be the objective of this symposium, whose speakers include:

Dr. Anthony Hodges —“Bite the Bullet: Myths and Realities of Civil War Medicine”

Dr. Hodges is on the board of Friends of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park and is a member of the Society of Civil War Surgeons.

Dr. Glenna Schroeder-Lein — “Samuel Stout and the Confederate Medical Service”

Dr. Schroeder-Lein is with the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and is author of “Confederate Hospitals on the Move.”

Marvin Sowder — “Dalton’s Confederate Hospitals”

Sowder is a member of the Civil War Roundtable of Dalton and is the recognized authority on Dalton-area Civil War medical history.

Dr. John Fowler — “Medical History of the 19th Tennessee Infantry Regiment (CSA)”

Dr. Fowler serves as the B.J. and Dicksie Bandy Chair in History at Dalton State College and is the author of numerous works on the western theater of the Civil War.

The day’s format will include two lectures in the morning, a break for lunch and two lectures in the afternoon.
