When the LaFayette High School FFA Land Evaluation teams competed in the North Georgia Regional Career Development Events against 36 other schools from across North Georgia, the Senior Skills Team took third place in the competition. Team member Kyle Newsome came in 16th out of 120 in the individual competition.

Ronnie Stephens, FFA advisor and agriculture instructor at LaFayette High said, “Land Judging is designed to develop skills in determining soil characteristics and land capability based upon the different types of soils.” In addition to land classes, students base their decisions upon factors such as slope of the land, topsoil and subsoil thickness, texture and permeability of subsoil, drainage and effective depth in order to determine the best land use.
