Lukas Gonzalez put on a show for the Blue Devils in the afternoon’s first match scoring five goals, four in the first half, and adding one assist in the non-region win.
Matt Fortune added a pair of second half goals and an assist. Jeff Langley, Josh Poole and Rob Cowart each tallied one goal for the Blue Devils who outshot LaFayette 29-8 on the day.
Noah Turner got LaFayette (0-1) on the board in the 72nd minute, slamming home an unassisted goal.
Brad Brown and Casey Payne hooked up in the 78th minute for the prettiest goal of the afternoon. Payne sent a perfect crossing pass to Brown who headed the ball in the back of the net.
“We’re young and learning and we’re going to go through some growing pains,” said LHS head coach Frank Price. “We’ve got some kids that can score, we just haven’t played enough to develop the chemistry we need yet.”
In the second game, LaFayette’s girls stayed unbeaten on the young season thanks to an impressive defensive effort.
All the scoring was done in the first half. Whitney Watson scored both markers for LaFayette. The first came in the fifth minute as the junior followed up her own shot and slammed home the rebound.
The final tally came just before the first half whistle. Jocelyn Thompson fed Watson with a great pass and Watson did the rest to give the Lady Ramblers a 2-1 halftime lead.
Then LaFayette’s defense took care of the rest. Trisha Smith recorded seven saves as the Lady Ramblers held Model without a shot in the second half.
For the game, LaFayette outshot the Lady Blue Devils 12-3.
“I told our team at halftime that defense would win this game,” explained LHS head coach Charles Rennard. “Our midfield really picked it up. Model played really well.”
The Lady Blue Devils lone goal came on a 25th minute penalty kick off the foot of Kris Jackson.
Results of Monday’s matches against Chattooga were unavailable at press time.
LaFayette will play Friday at Villa Rica. The girls kick off at 5:30 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow
