ROME, Ga. -- Friends and family mourned today for John Gregory Davis, who was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon. His alleged assailant, Robert Timothy Spriggs Jr., has been arrested and charged with murder.
Teresa Davis said her husband was an avid fisherman, hunter and mountain biker, and loved his friends at the Floyd County Schools maintenance department.
Superintendent Lynn Plunkett said Davis was a wonderful person who loved his job and the school system and took pride in everything he did.
“We're very sad, that really goes without saying,” Plunkett said Wednesday morning. “We've lost one of our family, and we are a family at Floyd County Schools. Our hearts hurt right now.”
Mrs. Davis said her husband had worked for Floyd County Schools for the past five years and before that he worked “odds and ends” jobs.
“He never settled until he found that job,” Mrs. Davis said. “He knew it would be his only job.”
Davis was the kind of man “that never met a stranger,” she said.
“He could talk to anyone,” she said. “Everyone that met him liked him.”
Davis said that she and her husband had been married just more than three years.
“His favorite thing besides his family and his daughter was his dog Max,” she said.
Max, an Australian Shepherd cattle dog, was once owned by Mrs. Davis but was taken over by her husband when they met and married.
Davis is survived by his wife, his daughter Hollie and stepdaughters Tiffany and and Jessica.
Fred Talley's Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday morning at the Church at Northside. Family will receive friends 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
