Frederick Lee Gates, 48, Ringgold

Frederick “Fred” Lee Gates of Ringgold died Tuesday, September 11, 2012. He was 48.

He was born in Chicago, Ill., on June 1, 1964. He was of the Christian faith, enjoyed coaching softball and was an avid University of Tennessee Volunteers fan.

He was preceded in death by his father, Claude Gates, and sister, Patty Schultz.

Survivors include his loving wife, Kim Gates; daughter, Brittany Gates; mother, Mary Gates, all of Ringgold; sis-ters, Carolyn Wallin, Janice Gates; brothers, George and Junior Gates; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service: Monday, September 17, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Gardens Cemetery in Fort Oglethorpe. Visitation: Sunday, September 16, from 4-8 p.m., and Monday from noon-1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Barbara Ann Alt, 74 , Rossville

Barbara Ann Alt of Rossville died Wednesday, September 12, 2012, in a local hospital. She was 74.

She was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., and moved to the Chattanooga area in 1972. She was a wonderful mother, a great friend and a gifted educator. A graduate of UTC and Berry College, education was important to her. Perhaps the happiest years of her life were the 17 years she spent teaching at LaFayette Middle School. She loved her stu-dents and the close bonds she had with her colleagues at LMS.

Survivors include her son, Bill and his wife Tara Alt of Mckinney, Texas; daughters, Elizabeth Alt and fiance Jim Horton of Ocala, Fla., and Barbara Alt and fiance Troy Williams of Red Bank, Tenn.; brother, John Hickey and his wife Eva of the Villages, Fla.; grandchildren, Caroline and Emily Alt and Tucker Williams; and, her constant com-panion, her beloved dog Mickey.

Funeral services: Saturday, September 15, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Father Liam Coyne offici-ating. Visitation: Friday, September 14, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charlotte Rebecca Dale Shadrick, 62, Chattanooga, Tenn.

Charlotte Rebecca “Becky” Dale Shadrick of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Tuesday, September 11, 2012. She was 62.

She was born to the late Marion and Barbara Dale on September 2, 1950, in Chattanooga. She was a member of Calvary Church of God, an employee with Wal-Mart and formerly employed at Pruett’s Food Town for 25 years, and she enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and the Game Show Network.

She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Karen and Cindy Dale; brothers, Mike Dale and William “Billy” Yell.

Survivors include her husband, Rev. Jerry Shadrick; son, Jerry Shadrick Jr., both of Chattanooga; daughter and son-in-law, Amber and Alan Gordy of Flintstone; sisters, Jody (Wayne) McConathy and Marlene (Robert) Bell; brothers, Paul “Butch” Dale, Jimmy (Laurie) Dale and Mark Dale; four grandchildren, Ayanna Shadrick, Haley, Autumn and Alexander Gordy; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Rickey “Paw” Barfield of LaFayette died Monday, September 10, 2012. He was 66.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ann Barfield Cook; brother, David Bowman; sisters, Marilyn Day and Rebecca Cook.

Gerald Dean Edwards of Chickamauga died Wednesday, September 12, 2012. He was 69.

She was preceded in death by parents, Garth and Alice Mae Edwards, and brother, James Edwards.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Edwards;, daughters, JoAnn Edwards and fiancé Daniel Jeffers of Smyrna, Tenn., Bobbie and husband, Brian England of LaFayettte; granddaughters, Micaela, Lain, and Kate; grandsons, Gavin, Nicholas, and Tristan; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Chester Louis Wooten, Jr., 87, Chickamauga

Chester Louis Wooten, Jr. of Chickamauga died on Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at his residence, surrounded by his loving and devoted family. He was 87.

He was born in Lupton City, Tenn., to the late Chester and Lillian Johnson Wooten. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1941 to 1942, and then served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He retired from Combustion Engineering in 1985 and was an avid bowler. He was a devoted husband, wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and a great man.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Louise Wooten and a sister, Imogene McGill.

Survivors include his sons, Danny (Mary) Wooten of Rossville, Johnny (Judy) Wooten of Trenton; daughters, Carolyn (David) Rous of Flintstone, Phyllis Mullican of Rossville and Sherry Wooten of Flowery Branch; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Wooten of Chattanooga, Olean (Beluah) Wooten of Chattanooga and Robert (Margaret) Wooten of Dalton; sister, Inez (Fred) Smith of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

Mary Christine Hicks of Rossville died Wednesday, September 12, 2012. She was 88.

She was born in Walker County, to the late George and America West, and was a member of Old Bethel Baptist Church in Chickamauga.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Laurence Hicks.

Survivors include her daughters, Fay (Jerry) Key of Rossville, Alicea (John) Prederick of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Nell Maner Hudlow, 91, Chickamauga

Nell Maner Hudlow of Chickamauga died Tuesday, Sep-tember 11, 2012. She was 91.

She was born in Subligna to the late Thomas Henry and Eler Pruitt Maner. She was a graduate of Gordon Lee High School Class of 1940 and had lived most of her life in Miami, Fla., and the past fifteen years back in Chickamauga. She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where she was a “Rosie Riveter” or aviation machinist. She had also worked at the Miami Coun-try Club where she was a waitress and at Pond Springs School in the cafeteria. She was of the Baptist faith.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest R. Hudlow; sister, Ovella Lusk; brothers, Roy and Tom Maner.

Survivors include her son, Steve M. (Maria) Hudlow of Ra-coon Mountain, Tenn.; grandchildren, Steven D. and Melissa Hudlow.

Mamie Sue Duckett Fincher Young, 84, Ringgold

Mamie Sue Duckett Fincher Young of Ringgold died Wednesday, September 12, 2012. She was 84.

A native of Niota, Tenn., she has resided in the Ringgold area for the past 60 years and is formerly of Menlo. She was a member of North Whitfield Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Fred Fincher; second husband, Onice Young; parents, William Levie and Bessie Lee Goodmon Duckett; three sisters, Ada Jones, Nana Lee Goodmon and Margaret Romine and brother, David Duckett.

Survivors include her seven children, Eddie (Judy) Fincher of Ringgold, Freddie (Linda) Fincher of Tunnel Hill, Eugene (Sheila) Fincher of Ringgold, J.C. Kenneth Mayhugh of Rossville died Friday, September 7, 2012, in a local hospital. He was 81.

He was a native of St. Louis, Mo., but had spent most of his life in the north Georgia area. He was a self-employed surveyor, was a U.S. Army veteran, and was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Mayhugh; son, Todd Mayhugh; and sister, Faith Mayhugh.

Survivors include his wife, Syble Nabors Mayhugh; children, Kenny Mayhugh of Atlanta, Tim Mayhugh of Houston, Texas, and Tonya Scallions of Signal Mountain; step-children, Mickey and Kenny Parsons, both of Chattanooga, Cindy Nabors of Harrison, and Robert Nabors of Chickamauga; brothers, Dennis Mayhugh and Dale Michaelis; sisters, Hope Bay and Nancy Otis; twelve grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews.

Katherine L. “Kathy” Baldwin of Rossville died on Friday, September 7, 2012. She was 80.

She was a longtime resident of Rossville and a member of Fairview Baptist Church. She retired from the U.S. Postal service following 25 years of service and was an avid sports fan, with favorites, the Atlanta Braves and Tennessee Vols.

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Buff; mother, Opal Payne and brother, Thomas Buff.

Survivors include her sons, Eddie Baldwin, Ricky Fouts and Ronnie Fouts; daughters, Sandra Green, Terry Dalyrmple, Dianne Shrum, Becky Dale and Patty Bradley; sister, Connie Dedmon; thirteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; several nieces and nephews.

Ruby Grace Vaught Yancy, 86, LaFayette

Ruby Grace Vaught Yancy of LaFayette died Saturday, September 8, 2012. She was 86.

Born in Dekalb County, Ala., she was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga, LaFayette area. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of LaFayette. She was formerly employed by Downtown General Hospital but preferred her role as homemaker. Her greatest joy in life came from being a wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She was a selfless, gentle, loving and caring lady. Devoted to her family, it was often said she was the glue that kept the family together.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Edward Dean Yancy.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Edwin T. and Pamela G. Yancy of Rock Spring; daughter, Paulette G. Reynolds of Ringgold; four grandchildren, Russell Reynolds, Julie Reynolds Bell, Nick Yancy and Stephanie Yancy Powell; six great-grandchildren, and countless devoted family members and loving friends. Her family would like to extend its deepest appreciation to the NHC of Ft. Oglethorpe staff for all their loving care, compassion and support during Ruby’s residency and recent illness. Also, many thanks to Dr. Phillip Newton for always being on call for Ruby’s healthcare needs. A special thanks to Hospice of Chattanooga and many thanks to our new friends and extended family, Kerri Harris, Carroll Sorrell and Tonita Jenkins for embracing Ruby and the family as they pampered us all in the last days.

Clark Castle Woodfin, Jr., of Fort Oglethorpe died September 10, 2012. He was 58.

He served in the United States Navy for 14 years and was in the Vietnam War. He was a member of Peaceful Valley Baptist Church in Rising Fawn.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clark Castle Woodfin, Sr.; sisters, Joyce Faye Conn and Deborah Elaine Woodfin.

Thomas "Tommy" Littleton Watts, 70, Signal Mountain

Thomas “Tommy” Littleton Watts of Signal Mountain died Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at his residence. He was 70.

A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., he has lived in the Signal Mountain area for the past 24 years. He was the former owner of Highland Opticians and has worked for Wal-Mart Vision Center for the past eight years. He was a member of Signal Mountain Baptist Church and Past Master of the Mountain City Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Littleton and Mary Alice Phillips Watts.

Survivors include his loving wife of 50 years, Jo Ann Plemons Watts of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Rodger Gilreath of Chattanooga, Tenn.; mother-in-law, Katherine Plemons of Ringgold; sister, Shirley Watts (Rev. Everett) Gossett of Red Bank, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Amanda Rogers (Tim), Steven Littleton Gilreath and Garren Lynn Gilreath; several nieces and nephews.

Lester “Shorty” Butler of LaFayette died Sunday, September 9, 2012. He was 70.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Delois Hall Butler; brothers, Johnathan Butler, Ernest Butler, and Archie Butler; parents, Milford Howard and Maggie Eller Butler.

Survivors include his sons, Chris and wife, Denise Butler, Wayland and wife, Chrystal Butler, all of Chickamauga; brothers, M.H. Butler, and Robert Butler; half sisters, Elizabeth Evergreen, and Truvella Butler; half brothers, Howard Butler, D.D. Patrick Ray McGill, 36, Chattanooga

Patrick Ray McGill recently of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Sunday, September 3, 2012. He was 36.

For 17 years, he was the beloved husband and best friend of Heather L. Johnson-McGill as well as the adored, loving, and attentive father of Nikolas Alexander McGill (11) and Lauren Elizabeth McGill (9). He was born in Ft. Oglethorpe and grew up in LaFayette surrounded by the love of his father and mother, Ronald Ray McGill and Margaret Diane Hawthorne McGill (deceased), sister, Leigh Ane McGill, and brother, Daniel McGill, as well as his large extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends. He was a 1994 graduate of LaFayette High School where his favorite subject was Art. During childhood, he developed his lifelong interest of drawing, animals, skateboarding, baseball, music, and American Sign Language.

Following high school, he was married in September 1994, and lived in LaFayette, for more than a year before moving to Brunswick. In 1996, he joined the United States Army and was assigned to Alpha Company, 40th Engineer Battalion, attached to the 1st Armored Division in Baumholder, Germany. With his brothers-in-arms, he served his country in multiple training exercises and deployments, to include Operation Joint Forge in Bosnia and Task Force Hawk. In 2000, he made a permanent change of station to the 10th Engineer Battalion, attached to the 3rd Armored Division at Fort Stewart. Upon completion of his enlisted contract, he was honorably discharged with combat veteran status in August 2001. On September 11, 2001, he joined the Army National Guard and remained in service for the following four years.

With the thoughts of securing the future for his children, he began college in January 2005. He graduated from Coastal Georgia Community College with an Associate of Science in Business in 2007, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts with a minor in Political Science in 2009, while working full time as a production supervisor. In his free time, he volunteered with both the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society in Brunswick, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Darien, where he attended regularly before he moved to accept employment away from his home.

He most enjoyed spending time with his children – reading, doing homework and projects with them, playing chess, riding bicycles, going to parks, being silly, teaching them about animals and nature, and loving them. When he was away from home, he made sure to write, email, and video-call his children and Heather to assure them of his love and devotion.

As he wished, Patrick’s life and love of God, family, and country will be given Military Honors at the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn., with family in attendance.

Funeral service: Monday, Sept. 10, from 4-7 p.m at The Marsh House in LaFayette. All friends and family are invited and encouraged to attend. Pallbearers: Master Sgt. Travis Surprise (U.S. Army), Lamar Battles, Eric Shelton, Daniel McGill, Caleb McGill, and Lucas Pledger.

Pastor Ronald L. Cabero, 61, LaFayette

Pastor Ronald L. Cabero of LaFayette died Monday, September 3, 2012. He was 61.

He graduated from Colegio Union in Lima Peru in 1974 with a bachelor degree in Theology. He worked as a pastor in La Paz Bolivia and in Honduras for eight years. He became an ordained pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist in 1980 in Alajuela, Costa Rica. He came to the United States in July 1985. He continued his work as a pastor throughout his life because his passion was his love for God. Ronald was an active member of Rock Spring Seventh Day Adventist Church, where he taught classes. He was very active in his community. He ran for Walker County School Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ricardo Cabero and Margarita A. Cabero; sister, Adela; and brothers, Francisco and Ernesto.

Hugh Herman Suttle Jr., of 2820 Duke of Gloucester East Point passed away. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Joe Hill Marsh.

Lowell Orin Plummer, 52, Chatsworth

Lowell "Poppy" Orrin Plummer went to be with the Lord on August 29, 2012. He was 52.

Lowell was born in Indianapolis, Ind. on Jan. 24, 1960, to the late Robert and Carolyn Plummer. He will be remembered for his love of Christ, the joy that he received from his grandchildren, and his laughter that will be severely missed by all that knew him.

Survivors include his children, Brooke (BE) Luker and Britanie (Brit) Stanley of Willis, Texas as well as Brandon (Bubba) Plummer and Danielle (Danny) Long of Ringgold; brothers, Kevin, Brain,Micheal, and Robert Plummer all formerly of Indiana; grandchildren, Emmaley Luker, Riley Hensley and Ella Long; many neices and nephews.

Margaret D. Shannon of Chattanooga died Monday, September 3, 2012. She was 89.

She was a long time member of Brainerd Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, visited shut-ins and played the piano for local nursing homes.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Bobby Jo Shannon and brother, James Sage, Jr.

Survivors include her grandson, Doug Dais of San Fransico, Calif.; and niece, Kim Crowe of LaFayette.

Larry B. Mason, 74, Fort Oglethorpe

Larry B. Mason of Fort Oglethorpe died Tuesday, September 4, 2012, in a local hospital. He was 74.

He was a member of the Church of Christ and was retired from ConAgra. He enjoyed holding bible studies in local nursing homes, antiques, visiting troubles children homes, loved to tell jokes and was involved in prison ministries.

He was preceded in death by his son, Russ Lassetter and parents, John C. and Jessie Mason.

Survivors include his children, Mardi L. Mason, Joni Mason, Gina Eskew, Jerry Mason, Yolanda Mason, Lee Bernard Mason and Rachel Mason; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John Reeves, 97, Rossville

John Reeves of Rossville died Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at a local health care facility. He was 97.

He was a native of Bryant, Ala., and had lived in Rossville for over 60 years, was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, and he retired from Singer Company in Chattanooga with over 25 years of service. His passions in life were his family, fishing, camping and gardening. He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Reeves; parents, Rev. Clyde and Exie Reeves; brothers, Luther, Charlie, Albert and L.C. Reeves; and sisters, Alma Varnell, Verda Hughes and Corda Underhill.

Survivors include his sons, Darrell Reeves of Rossville and David (Jane) Reeves of Woodstock; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ann Hartley Gentry, formerly of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, September 4, 2012. She was 87.

She had lived most of her life in the north Georgia area where her late husband, Ernest Lebron Gentry, was a homebuilder and land developer. She took an interest in the home building industry and became an interior decorator consultant with J.C. Penney Company and Belk Department stores from where she retired. She has been an active member of Rossville First Baptist Church where she participated in the choir and Sunday school, and at the time of her death, was a member of Concord Baptist Church.

Survivors include her only daughter and son-in-law, Carole Ann and Roger H. Kirby of Rock Island, Tenn.; grandson, Brent (Jaycee) Kirby of Mooresville, N.C.; granddaughter, Julie (Vance) Jones of Chickamauga; great-grandchildren, Alexa Kirby and Kirby Jones; sister, Charlotte Johnson of Hixson, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.

Nellie Elizabeth Parrish Autry of Ringgold died Tuesday September 4, 2012. She was 92.

A lifelong resident of the Walker and Catoosa County area, she was a member of Woodstation United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Calvin Autry; parents, Dolen Clifford and Edna Liddie Autry Parrish; two daughters, Marcella Kittle and Patricia Nichols and two brothers, Melvin Parrish and Dexter Parrish.

Survivors include three sons, Johnny (Rachel) Autry of Dunlap, Tenn., Rev. David (Linda) Autry of Summerville, and Donald (Linda “Midge”) Autry of Ringgold; four sisters, Eva Mae Williams of Chickamauga, Lolita Dyer of Ft. Oglethorpe, Dorothy Caldwell of Ft. Oglethorpe, and Evelyn Ross Wildwood; ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Savannah “Leroy” Andrews of Tunnel Hill died Saturday, September 1, 2012. He was 54.

He was born to the late Leroy and Georgia Andrews in Fort Oglethorpe on November 9, 1957. He was of the Baptist faith, a diesel mechanic with Cochran’s Tire Center and he enjoyed NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt, and was an avid collector of cars, airplanes and anything mechanical.

Survivors include his wife, Melissa Andrews of Tunnel Hill; step-son, Christopher Chase of Indiana; sisters and brother-in-law, Marilee “Tweety” Andrews of Tunnel Hill, Derinda (Keith) Lones of Ringgold; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jerry and Harriet Clark of Tunnel Hill; nephew, Greg Wise of Ringgold; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Christo-pher (Kim) Clark of Harrison.

Virginia Nell Stephens Liles of LaFayette died Sunday, September 2, 2012. She was 78.

She was born to the late Willie and Lillie Mae Stephens in Fort Payne, Ala., on December 23, 1933. She retired from Caron Spinning after 26 years, was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and enjoyed working crossword puzzles and spending time with her family.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roy Liles; son, Eugene Locklear; granddaughter, Alicia Liles and sev-eral brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffery Liles, Rodney and Sherry Liles, all of LaFayette; sisters, Doris Watts, Francis Walker, Faye Hunter, Barbara Lemons, Tina Lucas, Wanda Daniels, Brenda McKinney, Polly Parker and Daisy M. Cobb, Brother; Bill Stephens; five grandchil-dren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Carl Barnard Allen, 82, Rossville

Carl Barnard Allen, Sr. of Rossville died Friday, August 31, 2012. He was 82.

He was born in Rhea Springs, Tennessee, to the late John Benjamin and Cora Frances Allen. He graduated from Ross-ville High School in 1946 and graduated from University of Tennessee-Chattanooga with a Bachelor’s Degree. He served in the United States Army and served as past president of the Hospital Financial Management Association, past president of the Barnard Astronomical Society in Chattanooga, member of Tompkins Masonic Lodge and past worthy patron of the Eastern Star. He was a member of Brainerd Church of Christ.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and Lavens.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Loretta Allen of Rossville; children, Kathryn (Joe) Gill of Rossville, Carl (Nancy) Allen, Jr., of Chickamauga; siblings, Ginny (Kevin) Moore of Rossville, Evelyn King of Rossville, Ivan Allen of East Ridge, Sara Jo Lawson of Trenton, Carolyn Exum of Ar-kansas; granddaughter, Stephanie Gill; many nieces and nephews.

Ralph Larry Smith, II, 40, Chickamauga

Ralph Larry Smith II of Chickamauga died Sunday, Sep-tember 2, 2012. He was 40.

He was born in Chattanooga and had been a lifelong resi-dent of the Chickamauga area. He graduated from Gordon Lee Memorial High School, Class of 1990 where he was a member of The Marching Trojans Band. He had worked at A1 North America and Phillips Brothers Machine Shop before becoming disabled. He was a member of Shields Baptist Church in Chickamauga. He was a member of the Sons of the Confederates and enjoyed hunting.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Larry Smith, Sr.; grandparents, Edwin and Elsie Smith and Doris LaDuke.

Survivors include his wife, Vada Kristine Wright Smith; their children, Joseph Dakota “JoJo” Smith, Bailey Briana “BaBai” Smith; mother, Patricia Ann LaDuke Smith of Hix-son, Tenn.; grandfather, James LaDuke of Red Bank, Tenn.; sisters, Tiffany Ryan (Chad) of Ringgold, Calley Smith of Hix-son, Tenn., Dusty Smith of Ringgold; and four nephews.

Funeral services: Saturday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Pastor Billy Christol officiating. Visitation: Thursday, Sept. 6 from 7-9 p.m., Friday from 5-9 p.m. and Saturday morn-ing prior to the service.
