According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department:
Dalen Richard Maitland, 26, of Janine Way in Tunnel Hill, Ga., was arrested Dec. 19 on charges of shoplifting and obstruction or hindering of law enforcement officers.
Maitland remained in jail Friday morning, Dec. 21, with a bond set at $5,000.
Officers were dispatched to the Wal-Mart at 3040 Ga. 2 (Battlefield Parkway) just before 4 p.m. in reference to a shoplifting attempt, in which an off-duty police lieutenant who was at the scene attempted to detain Maitland, reports show.
"Dispatch advised that the officer was in a fight with the suspect on the parking lot of Fazoli's," officer James Clark said. "Upon my arrival, I found the suspect and the lieutenant in the parking lot with the suspect in custody."
Maitland was transported back to Wal-Mart for questioning and to meet with the store’s loss prevention officers, reports show.
"While in custody, the suspect made a voluntary statement that he was sorry for trying to steal from the store and for fighting with the officer," Clark said.
Store employees told police they had obtained the tag number of the vehicle believed to be Maitland's accomplice, that had left the store as the incident unfolded.
Officers contacted the owner of the vehicle, who stated that the other possible suspect was her son, and that she would contact him and tell him to turn himself in, reports show.
"I advised her that if he (the other suspect) didn't turn himself in, that I would take a warrant for his arrest," Clark said. "I spoke with her a short time later, and she advised me that she was aware that her son had taken a Blu-ray from Wal-Mart during the incident."
The second suspect never showed up to meet with officers, and Maitland was transported to Catoosa County jail without further incident.
