The Catoosa County chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK) recently recognized Barbara Roy for 50 years of service to the chapter.

Initiated into the organization on May 8, 1962, she attended Lakeview High School and later graduated from Tennessee Tech. She worked as a teacher at Lakeview Elementary School until 1965, then spent five years at home caring for her children, husband and extended family. She began her teaching career at Boyd Buchannan in 1970 and retired in 1986.

Over the years, she has served in all offices of the Catoosa ADK chapter, including two terms as chapter president. During her second term as president, she organized the Walker County chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, Gamma Beta. She has served as corresponding secretary, treasurer, sergeant-at-arms, chairman-elect and chairman of the Dalton District. She served as bylaws chairman for Georgia ADK and has attended many district, state and international meetings and conferences. Presently, she serves as a guiding hand and mentor for the current officers, as well as new members.

In addition to her ADK activities, Barbara was also active in the 1970s and 1980s with the American Diabetes Association-Chattanooga chapter, helping to organize the Tennessee affilliate of the American Diabetes Association. She served on the Tennessee state board as well as in other offices. During this very busy professional time, Barbara and her husband, Joe, raised two girls, Karen and Kathy, who were involved in chorus, band, editing the school newspaper and yearbook and cheerleading. After Joe's passing, Barbara married Bill Roy in 1992, and they recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary.

Alpha Delta Kappa is an honorary teacher’s organization that promotes teacher fellowship and aids in altruistic efforts, such as the Ronald McDonald House, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Catoosa County Stocking Full of Love. The group has also helped with disaster relief efforts. Recently, Georgia Alpha Delta Kappa donated more than $9,500 to help rebuild Ringgold Middle School and Ringgold High School.
