Ruth Potter Asbury, 70, Rossville
Ruth Potter Asbury of Rossville died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, in a local hospital. She was 70.
She had been a resident of Rossville for over 30 years and a member of the Crossing East Ridge Church of God.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ernest Potter, and brother, Jess Potter.
Survivors include her husband, Alfred Asbury; daughter, Tami (David) Roberts of Rossville; mother, Pearl Potter of Ft. Oglethorpe; brothers, Ernest Potter Jr. of Boaz, Ala., Gary Potter of Huntsville, Ala., Charles Potter of Cullman, Ala., and James Potter of Fayetteville, Tenn.; sisters, Judy Massengale of Hixson, Tenn., Vera Mae Roberson of Boaz, Ala; grandchildren, Susan and Isabella Roberts; sister-in-law, Rosa Potter of Ringgold.

Harold Dwight Houston, 85, Chickamauga
Harold Dwight Houston of Chickamauga died Saturday morning, Dec. 10, 2011. He was 85.
He was born in LaFayette to the late Daniel and Ada Houston. Dwight served in the U.S. Army in World War II, and later retired from Standard Coosa Thatcher after many years of service. He was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church in Chickamauga.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Edith Howard, and brothers, Earl, Leonard, Andrew, Ray, and Troy Lee Houston.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Juanita Woodrain Houston; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Ginger Houston of Franklin, Tenn., Stan and Deborah Houston of Ringgold; brother, Roy Houston of Franklin, Tenn.; granddaughter, Hollis Roberta Houston; and many nieces and nephews.

James Edward “Eddie” Lance, 71, Ringgold
James Edward “Eddie” Lance of Ringgold died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011. He was 71.
He was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and former member of Central Baptist Woodmore. Eddie was a 1958 Central High School graduate, named a football All-American and received the Thom McCann Trophy in 1957, played on the 1957 State Championship team and was awarded a football scholarship to Auburn University. He was very active with the Dixie Youth Baseball Program in Ringgold, member of the Brainerd Kiwanis Club and refereed High School football for several years.
Eddie loved woodworking, golf, gospel music, storytelling to his family, westerns, the Atlanta Braves and changing the seasons when his grandchildren changed sports. He was the former owner/operator of Mr. Transmission on Brainerd Road for over 20 years. Eddie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Edward Lance and Gladys Weathers Lance, and his brother-in-law, Bill Swann.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Marineal Lance; son, Mike (Dana) Lance; daughters, Susan (David) Crownover and Kristen (Ryan) Otting, all of Ringgold; eight grandchildren, Meredith, Zach, Sarah Beth Lance, Matthew and Kelby Crownover and Jordan, Emma Grace and Alex Otting; brother, Ron (Bert) Lance, Houston, Texas; sisters, Judy Swann, Snellville, and Dottie (Jack) Edwards, Cumming; and several nieces and nephews.

Ora Lee McAllister Ellis of Flintstone died Friday, Dec. 9, 2011. She was 103.
She was born to the late John and Minnie Kelley McAllister on March 3, 1908, in Walker County. She was a member of Flintstone Baptist Church and retired from Yates Bleachery with 50 years of service.
She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Irene Pitman and Lula Bell Wallace; brothers, Edgar, Frank and Jess McAllister, and son-in-law, Floyd Guffey.
Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth Ellis Guffey; brother, Lester (Rena) McAllister,; and several nieces and nephews.

Carl M. Epperson, 81, Flintstone
Carl M. Epperson of Flintstone died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011. He was 81.
He was born November 14, 1930, to the late William and Ella Epperson in Coffeyville, Kan. He was a member of Chattanooga Valley Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. Carl worked as a geologist for more than 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Janet; two sons, Brad (Becky) Epperson and Jeff (Jennifer) Epperson; six grandchildren, Darian, Taylor, Jordan, Blakely, Tyler and Caleb.

Roy Nelson Quails, 82, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Roy Nelson Quails of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011. He was 82.
He was born in Cherokee County, Ala., to the late John B. and Pearl Quails. He retired from Sherman-Reilly after many years of service, and attended Valley Memorial Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Mae Quails, and daughter, Willodean Townsend.

Charles Nelson, 79, Rossville
Charles Nelson of Rossville died Friday, Dec. 9, 2011. He was 79.
He was born in Rockwood, Tenn., but had lived in the Chattanooga area for most of his life and was a member of Gospel Chapel in Rossville. He was the owner and operator of Nelson Electric for more than 45 years before retiring in 2002. He enjoyed deep sea fishing and loved his dog, Chipper. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who will be sadly missed by everyone that knew him.
He was preceded in death by two stepsons, Richard and James Troxell, and granddaughter, Rachel Troxell.
Survivors include his loving wife of more than 56 years, Jean Nelson of Rossville; two sons and daughter-in-law, Gerald Nelson of Menlo, and Mike (Loretta) Nelson of Rossville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie (Charles) Green of Ringgold, Rhonda (Chris) Theis of Grand Blanc, Mich., and Anita (David) Jones of Ringgold; two brothers; six sisters; 14 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Bobby “Bob” Roosevelt Smith Sr., 78, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Bobby “Bob” Roosevelt Smith Sr., of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011. He was 78.
He was born to the late William A. and Dollie Smith in Gaffney, N.C., on March 22, 1933. Bob was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church for 35 years, a truck driver for 52 years working at Burlington Industries for 35 years. His CB handle was “Kingfish.”
He was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Annie Lou Tillman; and her sister, Peggy Cooper.

Rosa Lee Brannon of Flintstone died Tuesday, Dec. 06, 2011, in a local health care facility. She was 87.
She was retired from Chattanooga Bakery and was a member of the Rossville Seventh-day Adventist Church.
He was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph E. Brannon.

Royce Pascal Leonard, 89, Fort Oglethorpe
M. Sgt. Royce Pascal Leonard, Ret., of Fort Oglethorpe, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, in a local hospital. He was 89.
He was a longtime resident of north Georgia and a member of Fort Oglethorpe First Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. Mr. Leonard was retired from the U. S. Air Force serving in World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a longtime employee of the Rossville Post Office and was a retired postmaster for Trenton. Mr. Leonard was a Mason and a Shriner.

William Jeffrey Young, 64, Ringgold
William Jeffrey Young of Ringgold died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, at his residence. He was 64.
A resident of the Ringgold area for the past 15 years, he was formerly of Joliet, Ill. He was a former employee of East Tennessee Protective Services and was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served during the Vietnam War.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Dorothy Risden Young.

Marty Wooten, 55, Rising Fawn
Marty Wooten of Rising Fawn died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, in a local hospital. He was 55.
He was a lifelong resident of north Georgia. Mr.Wooten was a member of Ringgold United Methodist Church, and attended City Church of Chattanooga. He was a volunteer fireman and a member of the Trenton Masonic Lodge No. F&AM. Mr. Wooten had served as the EMS Supervisor at Hutcheson Medical Center for 25 years. After retiring as a paramedic he went into real estate/property management.

Joseph “J.C.” Ward, 100, Covington
Joseph “J. C.” Ward died Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011. He was 100.
He was a much-loved and longtime resident of Covington, having moved there in 1950 to establish Ward's Accounting Service. He operated until 1980, when he retired and turned the business over to his son and son-in-law. He and his wife later established Candle Light Bridal Shop on the Square in Covington. He was born in Gladeville, Tenn., which he always referred to as “The Garden Spot of the World.” After finishing school, he moved to Dalton, where he became a successful businessman. In Dalton, he met and married Oma Jean Cochran in 1935. They were married for 64 years until her death in 1999.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Vera, Stella Mae, Mary Sue; and brothers, Lofton Ward, Bennie Ward, Martin J. Ward, Dan Ward.

Dewey Lee Brown of LaFayette died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011. He was 80.
He was a member of Chamberlain Road Full Gospel Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Faye Irene Wood Brogdon, 92, Chickamauga
Faye Irene Wood Brogdon of Chickamauga died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011. She was 92.
She had lived most of her life in the Rainsville, Ala. area, before moving to north Georgia in 1967. She was a woman that the Lord blessed with many talents she was a seamstress, a poet, a song writer, an author and an artist. She was also blessed with a green thumb, which allowed her to grow beautiful flowers, as well as vegetable gardens and was also a part time public worker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Frank Brogdon.
Survivors include two daughters and son-in-law, Betty Thomas of Chickamauga, and Barbara (Clayton) Hill of Tenn.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Pete (Brenda) Brogdon of Attalla, Ala., Tony (Amy) Brogdon of Rossville, and Marty (Shelby) Brogdon of Rogersville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

James “Mike” Michael Chattin of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011. He was 51.
A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, he was a self-employed construction contractor and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Carolyn Griffith Chattin; and sister, Kaye Thomas.

James Michael Travillian, 23, Rossville
James Michael Travillian of Rossville died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011. He was 23.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Christopher John Reinhart.

Jimmy Earl Johnson of Rossville died Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, at home with his family. He was 71.
He was a lifelong resident of Rossville and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. He served his country in the U.S. Navy, retired from North American Royalties/Wheland Foundry in 2001 after 24 years of service and was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother who will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James N. and Maudie M. Paul Johnson; brothers, Jack, Cass, and Wayne Johnson.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Barbara Fisher Johnson; daughter, Kim Moore (Wade) of Rossville; son, Dale Johnson (Kristy Hall) of Rossville; siblings, Dorothy Oakes of Chattanooga, Tenn., Clara Mae Johnson of Rossville, Opal Brown of Smyrna, Geneva “Bitsy” Lee of Crossville, Tenn., and Bobby Joe Johnson of McDonald, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Dustin Moore, Tamara Moore, Wally Johnson, Sabrina Johnson, and Paige Moore; great-grandson, Landon Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

Elbert “Al” Walter Crow of Ringgold died Monday, Dec. 5, 2011. He was 69.
He was born to the late Clements and Flossie Crow in Walker County on Jan. 4, 1942. He was of the Baptist faith, a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, a retired truck driver with McKee Bakery with 20 years of service, a member of Boynton Lions Club, and an extremely happy man.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, Floyd Crow; sister, Pearlie Mae Stoker.

Timothy Douglas Roach of Chickamauga died Monday, Dec. 5, 2011. He was 62.
He was born in LaFayette to the late Dave and Lucille Lamb Roach. He had resided most of his life in Chickamauga and was a graduate of Gordon Lee High School. He was a former employee of High-Rise Steel Work and was currently self-employed.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Rodney Shane Roach.

Dewey Lee Brown of LaFayette died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011. He was 80.
He was a member of Chamberlain Road Full Gospel Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Fred Haskell Barbare of LaFayette died Monday, Nov. 28,2011, at his residence. He was 74.
Mr. Barbare was born April 19, 1937, in Summerville, the son of the late Cleveland and Lena Mann Barbare. He was a retired security gaurd at Bunge Oils.
He was preceded in death by a son, Fred “Kim” Haskell Barbare; sister, Joyce Ferguson, and brother, Buck Barbare.

Ruth Elizabeth Ellinger of Chickamauga died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011. She was 61.
She had lived in the north Georgia area for most of her life and was a member of Kingdom of God Church in Chickamauga. She enjoyed gardening and flowers and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
She ws preceded in death by her father, Lester Leon Byrd Sr.

Ruby Ellen Brannon, 76, Ringgold
Ruby Ellen Brannon of Ringgold died Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011. She was 76.
She was born in Fort Payne, Ala., to the late Dennis and Grace Pendergrass, but had lived in the Ringgold area for most of her life. She was a member of the Rossville Church of God of Prophecy and retired from Bi-Lo as the deli manager in 1994, after more than 30 years of service. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who will be sadly missed by all that knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Robert Brannon; and grandson, Michael Brannon.
Survivors include three daughters and son-in-law, Glenda Brooks of Ringgold, Brenda Donaldson of Rossville and Beverly (Steve) Beaty of Rossville; son and daughter-in-law, David (Barbara) Brannon of Savannah; two brothers, Rev. Wilma Dean Hudgins Patterson of LaFayette died Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, at her home. She was 79.
Ms. Patterson was born April 6, 1932, the daughter of the late Major and Maude Rooks Hudgins. Ms. Patterson was a retired weaver at Mt. Vernon Mills.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Patterson.

Mary K. Holder of LaFayette died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, in Chattanooga, Tenn., near her residence of the past 10 years in LaFayette. She was 74.
Mary was born in Martinsburg, Ind., and grew up in Palmyra before residing in Clarksville for 35 years. Mary worked as an administrative assistant for her husband and as a real estate agent for many years. Mary was a Christian and worshipped over the years with the Palmyra, Ind., Silver St, Ind., Clarksville, Ind., LaFayette and Pleasant Grove Churches of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Geneva Coleman.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia area where she was a member of the Ridgedale Baptist Church and the Windstone Golf Club, and had been a volunteer at Parkridge Hospital. She was a wonderful loving wife and mother who will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Mary and Dewey Miners, and brother, Shawn Logsdon.
