The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) is advising motorists in Walker County of a detour off Hwy. 136 between Hwy. 341 and Hwy. 193 beginning Oct. 16 to accommodate work on replacing the bridge over Chickamauga Creek.

Hwy. 136 at that location will be closed to through traffic for several months, and traffic will be detoured off the highway on to Hwy. 341 and Hwy. 193. Work on this bridge is expected to be completed by the end of July 2013.

“We understand that the closure of Hwy. 136 at that location may cause some inconvenience to the traveling public, but it is necessary for replacing the bridge over Chickamauga Creek as quickly as possible, relocating Kensington Rd., reconstructing the bridge approaches and giving the highway back to the traveling public,” said DeWayne Comer, district engineer at the Georgia DOT office in Cartersville.

This road closure marks the beginning of a .236-mile project of construction of a bridge and its approaches on Hwy. 136 over Chickamauga Creek in Walker County. Work on this project has just begun, and the entire project is expected to be completed by the end of September 2013 at a construction cost of $1,769,641.
