Aptly named “Coming Home,” the show tells the band’s story, featuring songs such as “Over the Rainbow” from the Wizard of Oz and “Home Sweet Home” by Motley Crue. Other highlights include Dvorak’s “New World Symphony,” “Going Home,” and “Homeward Bound” by Simon and Garfunkel.
In memorial, the show included white crosses and American flags honoring the eight Catoosa citizens who lost their lives in the tornado. Along with the dedication, the band celebrated its sixtieth birthday this year with a rendition of the Beatles’ classic, “Birthday.”
Following tradition, the RMTB was recognized for their superior skill, discipline and hard work by receiving top honors at two competitions. They traveled to the White Columns Marching Band Invitational in Milton, Ga., in September where they competed against 15 other bands from the region. While there, they were awarded superior ratings in all areas and were crowned Grand Champion.
The following week (Oct. 6) the band of 150+ journeyed to the Lake Lanier Tournament of Bands at Chestatee High in Gainesville, Ga., where they out-played 21 additional high school bands from all over north Georgia, including several from the Atlanta area. Continuing the band’s legacy of excellence, they were recognized for their outstanding performance in all areas, gaining another Grand Champion trophy, the Gene Shadburn Salute to Marching Bands award for Best Overall Band and the Ronald J. Evans Outstanding Musicianship Award for earning the highest band score of the tournament.
Lisa Murdoch, band booster president praised the band for their efforts.
“I’m so proud of all our band students,” Murdoch said, “not only for their band performances, but for all of their achievements outside of band. They have goals and are great examples of the definition of 'commitment.' They are wonderful ambassadors for our community. They are an outstanding group of young people doing some remarkable things!”
Following this success, the Tiger Band was honored with the invitation to march in the New York City Veteran’s Day Parade, Nov. 11. Students and loyal band fans traveled to NYC where they toured the city and marched in the parade on Sunday. Band parents said the students “proudly represented Ringgold High School and the community as a whole.”
Upon their return, RMTB demonstrated their character further by spearheading the collection of donations for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Items were collected at two locations on the school campus and will be transported by transfer truck to the New York/New Jersey area in late November. The band wishes to extend a special thanks to Covenant Transport for donating the use of the vehicle and transportation expenses.
“We know firsthand how it feels to lose so much due to a natural disaster,” Murdoch said. “So many people from all over the United States came or sent donations to help Ringgold in our time of need. We felt it not only our duty but also our privilege to give back to others who are hurting and trying to put their lives back together following Hurricane Sandy.”
