The Dalton State Foundation awarded 116 scholarships to 111 students at its annual Scholarship Day ceremony. Seventeen scholarships went to students from Catoosa County.

Ringgold student graduates from University of the Cumberlands
Gregory McCalmon of Ringgold received a bachelor of science degree in business administration and religion during University of the Cumberlands annual commencement ceremony on Saturday May 7.
This year, Cumberlands recognized its largest graduating class, 324 students receiving bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. The graduating class also accumulated over 100,000 hours of community service during their tenure at UC.
Located in Williamsburg, Ky., University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of study; nine pre-professional programs; seven graduate degrees, including a doctorate and six master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
Catoosa student receives Piedmont degrees
Phillip Sloan of Ringgold was among the 440 students receiving degrees from Piedmont College at the recent May commencement ceremonies. He earned a bachelor of science in biology with honors.
Piedmont College is an independent liberal arts college of about 2,800 students with campuses located in Demorest and Athens, Ga. Founded in 1897, the college offers undergraduate degrees in 32 major areas, master’s degrees in education and business, and a doctorate degree in education.
Dalton State graduates 63 from Catoosa County
In its 44th commencement ceremony held recently at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center, John O. Schwenn, President of Dalton State College, conferred degrees and certificates on 425 graduates, including 63 from Catoosa County.
Of the diplomas earned, 172 — nearly 42 percent — were bachelor’s degrees awarded by the school of business (52), school of education (76), school of liberal arts (12), school of sciences and mathematics (18), and 14 from the school of social work. The first-ever bachelor’s degrees were awarded in chemistry, history and criminal justice. In addition, 64 associate of science degrees in nursing (registered nursing) were awarded as well as 119 other associate degrees and 57 certificates.

Chickamauga student bound for grad school
Judson College senior Sarah Elisabeth Jones of Chickamauga has been accepted to graduate study at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
She will be in the third class in UAB's new master of biotechnology program. After this one-year program, Jones hopes to begin Ph.D. study in bioagriculture.
“Agriculture is our largest export,” Jones said, “and I'd like to have a career in this field, perhaps working for the USDA.”
The daughter of Steve and Sarah Jones of Chickamauga, Jones will graduate from Judson with a bachelors of science degree on June 25.
Jones was also recently honored at Judson College’s recent Honors Convocation. She was named a President's Scholar to the Beta Beta Beta Biology Honor Society, the Jane Jewett Interdisciplinary Honor Society and to Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society.

Rossville student receives master’s degree
Carrie Fitzsimmons of Rossville received a masters of business administration degree in graduation ceremonies May 7 at Bryan College.
Fitzsimmons was among 11 students receiving MBA degrees during commencement for the School of Adult and Graduate Studies at Bryan’s main campus.
During the ceremony she delivered the graduation address for students in the MBA program.
Bryan is a Christian liberal arts college offering bachelor’s degrees in 18 areas and Master’s degrees in Business Administration and Christian Studies. The college has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report for 16 consecutive years as being among the top tier of Southern liberal arts colleges.
Truett-McConnell students named to president’s club and dean’s list
Truett-McConnell College announces that four Walker County students received academic recognition for the spring semester 2011.
Susan Martin of LaFayette named to the president’s club with a 4.0 semester average.
Named to the dean’s list with a semester average of 3.50 or higher were Stephen Schaub, Joshua Rumphol and Alexander Miller of Rock Spring.
