Wilma Britton Caldwell, 89, Fort Oglethorpe
Wilma “Bill” Britton Caldwell of Fort Oglethorpe died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011. He was 89.
He was a native of Cragford, Ala., and had lived in the north Georgia area for the past 30 years. He was self-employed in the heating and air conditioning business. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, a Mason and a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Cragford, Ala..
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Gladys Joiner Caldwell, and daughter, Joyce Arlene Charron.
Survivors include sons, Alton “Larry” (Kathy) Caldwell of Hillsdale, Mich., Gary (Wendy) Caldwell of Berlin, Md., Jerald (Terri) Caldwell of Fort Oglethorpe and Glenn (Sandra) Caldwell of Virginia Beach, Va.; daughters, Barbara (James) King of Rossville and Sandra Gibson of Ringgold; brother, Kermit Caldwell; sisters, Ann Brewer, Lucille Land and Delwyn McCormick; 20 grandchildren and numerous great- grandchildren.
Memorial service: Thursday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Ringgold, with Rev. Johnny Spicer officiating and the family receiving friends after the service at the church. James Wesley Webb, 94, LaFayette
James Wesley Webb of LaFayette died Monday, Aug. 29, 2011. He was 94.
J.W. was preceded in death by his parents, James Alfred and Willie Leming Webb; sisters, Jewel Montgomery and Kathlene Hutton, and brothers, Voy Webb, Ollie Webb and Walter Thomas.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, 55-year member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1579, worked for T.V.A., and was a member of Young Farmers.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Templeton Webb of LaFayette; daughters, Beverly (Charles) Ragstale of Hamilton, Teresa Richard of Rossville and Keila (Butch) Beaird of LaFayette; sons, Tim (Vivian) Webb and Terry (Ann) Webb; sister, Mattie Caheely; brother, Jim Webb; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside service: Thursday, Sept. 1, at 2 p.m. in LaFayette Cemetery with service conducted by Todd Gaddis, Rev. Ricky Studdard, and Rev. Randy Bryant. Barbara Chandler Barron, 59, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Barbara Chandler Barron of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, in a local health care facility. She was 59.
Barbara was a native and lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area. She was of Christian faith and known for her fun-loving spirit, quick wit and sense of humor.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Leon and Neva Moore Chandler, and brother, Daniel Lee Chandler.
Survivors include her daughters, Millisa Barron Davis, Tracy Barron and Monica Barron; granddaughter, Autumn Ludwikowski; brothers, Leon and Wayne Chandler, both of Chattanooga, Tenn.; aunt, Charlotte Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth B. Anne Galyon, 76, Chickamauga
Elizabeth B. Anne Galyon of Chickamauga died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at her home surrounded by her loved ones in Chickamauga. She was 76.
Anne was born in Seneca, S.C., a daughter of the late Monroe T. and Hermie M. Breazeale, and preceded in death by her first husband, Walter E. Rankin Jr. of Fort Valley.
Anne loved and lived life to the fullest through her strong faith and love for Jesus Christ. She was his servant formerly at Chickamauga Presbyterian Church and currently at Hope Fellowship. She served and accepted the roles of elder and clerk of the session while laying the foundation to help build Hope Fellowship.
She had worked at Chickamauga Drug Store for nine years and retired when her health started to decline. She also worked for David Bosshardt, M.D., retiring after 12 years as his office manager. Mrs. Galyon was always active in her communities – in Fort Valley as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and as the state volunteer leader of 4-H. She was a member of the Chattanooga/LaFayette Emmaus Community.
Survivors include her husband of 26 years Jess “Bill” Galyon; son, Walter (Darlene) Rankin III of Fort Oglethorpe; daughters, Libbie (LaRue) Hamilton of Lawrenceville and Laura (Michael) Phillips of LaFayette; stepson and stepdaughter, Mike Galyon and Susan (Marvin) Galyon, both of Chickamauga; sister-in-law, Emily (Kent) McCluskey of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Scott and Jeff Galyon of LaGrange, Bob Swanson and Amber Jones of Chickamauga, and Alex, Dylan and Haydon Phillips of LaFayette.

Elbert Lebron Gatlin, 65, Lookout Valley
Elbert Lebron “Butch” Gatlin of Lookout Valley died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, in a local hospital. He was 65.
Mr. Gatlin served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps for 14 years, earning the rank of Sergeant while serving during Vietnam and in the Reserves. He received the Navy Commendation Medal with Valor and was retired as a master tool and die maker. Butch was a member of the Cherokee Tribe of Northeast Alabama and his tribal name was “Iron Buffalo.”
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Brenda Gatlin, in 2009; his parents, Ed and Lena Gatlin; father, Elbert “Junior” White, and daughter, Mary Gatlin.
Survivors include his children, Annette (Darian) Barnes, Eric Lebron Gatlin, Laura (Jerry) Leonard and Rachel Lynn Gatlin; mother, Ella “Betty” Ellis; brothers, Bill and David Friar; sister, Pat Walker; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nieces; nephews and father-in-law, Bill Little of Chickamauga.

Bertha Braskey Ireland Lowery, 93, LaFayette
Bertha Braskey Ireland Lowery of LaFayette died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011. She was 93.
She was born in Chickamauga to the late Henry Grady Ireland and Mary Missouri Isabell Ireland. She had worked at Crystal Springs Mill in Chickamauga and retired from Regal Mills in Trion. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, growing flowers and feeding deer in her backyard. She was of the Baptist faith.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Blanco Lowery; daughters, Jacquelyne Bobbie Lowery and Patsy Kay Lowery, and her siblings, Hansel, Jessie, Maxie, Bobbie and Lois Ireland.
Survivors include her children, Jimmie Alvin Lowery of Proctor, Okla., Judy L. Lowery of LaFayette and Jerry Franklin Lowery of Ashland City, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Teri Ann Massingill, 53, East Ridge
Teri Ann Massingill of East Ridge, Tenn., died Friday, Au. 26, 2011. She was 53.
She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was of the Baptist faith. She was previously employed with Benchmark Physical Therapy as the office manager for many years, loved animals and enjoyed camping.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ray Griggs; husband, John Robert Massingill; son, Johnny Ray Massingill, and her sister, Frances Strickland.
Survivors include her mother, Dollie Poole of Chattanooga, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Shawnna (Ricky) Skiles of East Ridge, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Justin and Ryan Young and Jacob Massingill, and two nephews.

Pauline Katherine Fox Messenger of Ringgold died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011. She was 85.
A resident of the Ringgold area for the past 10 months, she was formerly of Joppa, Md., and had attended First Baptist Church of Creswell Road, formerly known as Harford Furnace Baptist Church in Bel Air, Md.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Francis Messenger; mother, Ruth Dunbar Grogg; father, Eric Elsworth Fox, and grandson, Richard Alan Gardner.

Juanita Georgia Douglas McSpadden of LaFayette died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011. She was 83.
She was a member of the Gordon Lake Weselyan Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Shorty McSpadden; parents, George Luther and Lucy Kersey Miles Douglas; brother, Thamer Kersey, and grandson, Billy McSpadden.
Survivors include a son, David (Tammy) McSpadden and granddaughter, Luci McSpadden, all of Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.

Kenneth Wallin, 69, Rossville
Kenneth Wallin of Rossville died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at a local hospital. He was 69.
Mr. Wallin retired as an over-the-road truck driver and from Combustion Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a Christian man of the Baptist faith, was a wonderful husband, father and brother and will be dearly missed by his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Maugaree Wallin, and brother, James Arle Wallin.
Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Faye Wallin of Rossville; daughter, Devona Sears; son, Gregory Laymon; four grandchildren, DeAnna, Jessica, Rachel and Anya, and brothers, Don and Michael Wallin.

Barbara Watkins, 70, Hixson, Tenn.
Barbara Watkins of Hixson, Tenn., died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011. She was 70.
She had lived in the Hixson area for most of her life and loved the Smoky Mountains. She also enjoyed gospel singing and good preaching. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Sarah Manning.

Kenneth Lee Wiberley, 50, Rock Spring
Kenneth Lee Wimberley of Rock Spring died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. He was 50.
He was born in Polk County, Tenn., on July 28, 1961. He was a business analyst for Propex, Inc. He was a member of First Baptist Church of McCaysville, a member of the Blue Ridge Lodge #67 F&AM, and a U.S. Navy veteran. Ken received an AAS degree in management and supervisory development from Northwestern Technical College in 2001. He received a BBA in accounting and finance from American Intercontinental University in 2007. Ken was a presenter at the Americas’ SAP Users Group (ASUG) national conference in 2009.
Kenneth was a Scout in Troop 14 of Ducktown, and then Troop 32 of Epworth where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, the mountains and hiking. While a Scout, he hiked the Philmont Scout Reservation Wilderness of New Mexico with Troop 32. He was gifted working with his hands, creating several items for family members on his wood lathe in his shop. Ken also loved to watch the Falcons. He loved our three horses, the cats and spoiled them all.
Survivors include his wife, Tracy Wimberley of Rock Spring; parents, Shelbia and Nick Wimberley of McCaysville; brother, Timothy Glenn (Mary) Wimberley of Suwanee; father-in-law, Elliot Wiener of Wellington, Fla.; mother-in-law, Dodi Wiener of Rock Spring; grandmother, Blanche Wimberley of Ducktown, Tenn.; one uncle; three nieces and several cousins.

Rev. A.D. “Dexter” Beasley of Rossville died Monday, Aug. 29, 2011. He was 80.
Rev. Beasley was an evangelist and minister for more than 60 years and was the founder of the Chattanooga Valley Church of God. He was also retired from Borg Textiles as a machine operator.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lovie T. and Nellie Ruth Beasley, and brothers, Daniel and Robert Beasley.

Camela Byrd, 42, Lookout Valley
Camela Byrd of Lookout Valley died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011. She was 42.
Cammie had lived her life in Lookout Valley and was a 1987 graduate of Lookout Valley High School. She was a true fan of “One Life To Live” and a member of Michael Easton and Kassie DePaiva’s fan clubs. She attended both Kassie’s show in Nashville and Super Soap Weekend every year. Cammie was also a big New York Yankees fan.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Cam and Espa Garner and Conner and Buelah Byrd.

Harold was a member of the Revival Baptist Church.

Winnie “Bill” Gale of Chickamauga died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011. She was 65.
She was born to the late Sammy and Lena Wallace Peele in Laurinburg, N.C., on March 12, 1946. She moved to the north Georgia area 21 years ago from Apison, Tenn., was of the Baptist faith, and retired from Restaurant Enterprises.
She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years, Butch Gale; three brothers, Luther, Charles and Bobby Peele, and sister, Catherine Norton.
Survivors include three daughters and son-in-law, Kathryn Sue and Jimmy McCallie of Birchwood, Tenn., Shirley Brown of Chickamauga and Billie Jo Davis of Fort Oglethorpe; two sons and daughters-in-law, Junior and Catherine Gale of Bryant, Ala., and Bobby and Rachel Gale of Shelbyville, Tenn.; two sisters and brother-in-law, Margaret Lowery, Louise and Pete Morton, all of Jacksonville, N.C.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Hubert Peele of Ocean Isle, N.C., and Harold and Shelby Peele of Rockingham, N.C.; 22 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Barbara Lou Ashley Magin Cantrell of Flintstone died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at a local hospital. She was 90.
A resident of the north Georgia and Chattanooga, Tenn., area for most of her life, shew as formerly of Winchester, Tenn. She was a former employee of the Walker County school system, where she worked part-time in the cafeteria, and was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Joyce Ann Cannon, and parents, William Henry and Lucy Ann Smith Ashley.

Betty Hale Gilbreath died Monday, Aug. 22, 2011. She was 93.
She was a member of LaFayette First Baptist Church and a member of the Seekers Sunday school class, and she taught Sunday school for over 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Monty Lewis Gilbreath; parents, Minnie Smith and A.R. Hale; sisters, Allene Underwood, Jamie Moore, Nell Edwards, Ernestine Bartlett and Martha Oliver.
Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer (Dr. Jim Revis) of Ranger; son, Mike (Jo Gilbreath) of LaFayette; two sisters, Daphne Edge and Ellen Carmeron, both of LaFayette; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Margie Ann McDaniel Bridges of Ringgold died Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at her residence. She was 69.
A lifelong resident of the Ringgold area, she was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her father, J.D. McDaniel; mother and stepfather, Margaret and T.R. Vaughn, and stepbrother, Eddie McDaniel.

Thomas “Tom” Gordon Land of Tunnel Hill died Saturday, Aug.13, 2011, at a local hospital. He was 79.
A lifelong resident of the Ringgold area, he was a former employee of Lancer Enterprises and attended New Friendship Primitive Baptist Church in Ringgold.

Marjorie Elder Graham, 87, Pawleys Island, S.C.
Marjorie Elder Graham, widow of Thomas Hunter Graham, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at the Lakes at Litchfield. She was 87.
Born on April 8, 1924 in Chickamauga, she was the daughter of John Glenn Elder and Dixie Eugenia Henderson Elder. She graduated from high school there, attended Randolph-Macon Women’s College and was a graduate of the University of Chattanooga. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority and taught at Radford College in Radford, Va. She appeared in summer theater plays in New York.
Her husband was a textile executive and they lived in a number of places – Cheraw, S.C., Altavista, Va., and Greensboro, N. C. – before retiring to Pawleys Island, where they were active members of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church. They were active leaders in building the church. Mrs. Graham was a co-founder of the scholarship committee, taught Sunday school and taught and coached children in acting for years at the Joy School. For her services, she received a Life Membership Award to the Women of the Church. Mrs. Graham served as Regent of the Winyah Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a member of the Waccamaw Garden Club, the Georgetown Historical Society and the Litchfield Country Club.
Survivors include her son, Thomas Hunter Graham II and his wife Sarah; grandson, Thomas Hunter Graham III, and several nieces and nephews.

Homer Lee Anderson, 90, Fort Oglethorpe
Homer Lee “Andy” Anderson of Fort Oglethorpe died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at his residence. He was 90.
He had been a resident of the Chattanooga and north Georgia areas for over 50 years. Mr. Anderson was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a veteran of the Army Air Force, serving in World War II. Mr. Anderson was very active in community service, having served as a former council member and mayor of Fort Oglethorpe. He was very active with the Catoosa County Development Board and Family and Children’s Services. He served as past president of the Fort Oglethorpe Kiwanis Club and was former owner of ACT Business Machines.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Ella Anderson, and daughter, Kyna Babb.

Sara Frances Fischer Brock, 83, Lookout Mountain
Sara Frances Fischer Brock of Lookout Mountain died Monday, Aug. 22, 2011. She was 83.
She was born Sept. 2, 1927, in McMinnville, Tenn. Sara was involved in her community and loved her church. She lived in Rossville until 2004, then moved to Lookout Mountain to be close to her children. Sara graduated from George Peabody for teachers and taught 9th grade English in LaFayette and Baltimore, Md. Volunteering was a big part of her life. She served on the board of the Houston Museum, worked in the Hunter Museum gift shop and the Hutcheson Hospital gift shop, and spent many years delivering meals for Senior Neighbors. Sara attended Brainerd Church of Christ and most recently, First Christian Church, where she sang in the choir. The McCallie School family will remember her sitting for six decades on the sidelines of football games watching her sons and grandsons play ball. She loved gardening, playing bridge, antiquing and walking for miles on Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis “Frank” Morris Fischer and Ova Robinson Fischer; her husband, John William Brock Jr., and her son, Paul Fischer Brock.

Rossie Bell Cole of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011. She was 85.
She had lived in the Chattanooga area for most of her life and was a member of Clifton Hills Baptist Church. She loved quilting and had hand quilted for Ann’s Quilt Shop for many years. To this day her quilts are treasures and are owned all over the United States. She was so loved and cherished by her family and friends and adored all her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Our Mom and Granny will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Edna O. Harrover, 98, Arlington, Va.
Edna O’Neal Harrover of Arlington, Va., died Feb. 28, 2011, at Sunrise Care in Springfield, Va. She was 98.
She was born Feb. 5, 1913, in LaFayette. She was one of five children born to Arch and Eleanor Maude (Hatfield) O’Neal.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Luther E. (Jack) Harrover in 1973. After granduating from Georgia College in Milledgeville in 1935, Edna had a civil service career with the Dept. of Agriculture in the District of Columbia. In retirement, she enjoyed many years in the antiques business in Middleburg and Alexandria, Va. and other locales. She was a member of the Washington St. United Methodist Church in Alexandria and past member of the Washington St. United Chapter of the Daighters of the American Revolution. She will be deeply missed by many who saw her live graciously and independently well into her 90s.
Survivors include her niece, Dorothy A. Scoggins of Roswell; nephews, James R. Stewart of Dunwoody, Eugene Cummings of Meansville and Jeffrrey C. and Gregory P. Dwinell of Granby, Ma.; grand- and great-grand-nephews and -nieces and close friends, James and Ruth Carrington, Danely Patino and Patricio.

Mrs. Eva L. Payne of LaFayette died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, in a local health care center. She was 83.
She was a member of Happy Home Baptist Church and a retired teacher of 33 years in the Walker County school system.

Richard Edward Barry of Chickamauga died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at his home. He was 72.
He was born in Neptune, N.J., to the late Horace and Frances Barry. Richard retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service and worked for Dade County School Systems as a trades master before moving to Chickamauga.
He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Denise Hudgins, and sister, Joan Kosswig.

She was born to the late Henry and Billie Jo Britt Bridges in Fort Oglethorpe on July 17, 1954. She enjoyed cutting and pasting pictures, especially of her beloved country music entertainer, Keith Urban.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Gloria Swanson.

Bob Davison Gilbert, 92, LaFayette
Bob Davison Gilbert died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at home. He was 92.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Stallings Gilbert; parents, Ellen Davison and C.C. Gilbert of LaFayette, and one brother, Charles Martin Gilbert of LaFayette.
He graduated from LaFayette High School in 1935 and the University of Georgia in 1938. After granduation he started working at The Bank of LaFayette in 1939. He volunteered for service in the U.S. Army. He served in the Air Core, 317 fighter Squadron in the North African, Italian and European campaigns. He was married to Ethel Stallings Gilbert for 60 years.
Survivors include four children, Ethel Ware (Belfield) Carter of Atlanta, Dave (Jane Ellen) Gilbert of LaFayette, Ellen (Kenneth) Jackson of LaFayette and Wade (Lisa) Gilbert of LaFayette; 11 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family expresses special appreciation to several past and present caregivers for their loving care during the past years.
Mr. Gilbert served as president of The Bank of LaFayette from 1953-1967. He was Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board until 1084. He was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church of LaFayette. He was a member of the Lions Club and Gordon Pond Fishing Club. He was a charter member of Boy Scout Troop No. 67. He received the Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award in 1989.

Kenneth L. Hughes, 65, Fort Payne, Ala.
Kenneth L. Hughes of Ft. Payne, Ala., died Friday, August 19, 2011. He was 65.
He was a resident of Ft. Payne for many years and was of the Christian faith. Kenneth served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Betty Kreis Hughes.

Gilbert Ray Miller, 86, Ringgold
Gilbert Ray “Bud” Miller of Ringgold died Aug. 19, 2011. He was 86.
He was born in Chattanooga to the late Albert and Isadora Miller. Bud served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later retired from T.V.A. after 26 years of service as a shift engineer.
He was also preceded in death by his sons, Alan Ray Miller and Dr. Barney Earl Miller.

Lenora Williams Roth, 86, Kensington
Lenora Williams Roth of Kensington died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at her home. She was 86.
She was born in Raymondsville, Texas, to the late Riley Davis and Olivia Carlton Williams. She retired from Bell South/ AT&T after many years of service, and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, St. Elmo Garden Club, Cumberland Hiking Club, High Point Community Improvement Club, Walker County Historical Society and Lookout Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her sisters, Lottie Price, Lillie Mae Boren, Lois Ruth Williams and Lillian Green.
She was an affectionate, loving sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She joyfully filled her role as a faithful child of God and especially loved her church family. Her smile radiated happiness to everyone she met and you were always ensured a great hug. Her life was lived as an unselfish person who always thought of her husband, children or friends before herself. Studying her Bible, doing her morning jumble from the paper, gardening, going to yard sales, collecting and cooking were just a few of her many passions.

Virginia Clarkson Coulter of Arcadia, Fla., died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011. She was 97.
She was a resident of Walker County before retiring to Florida. She retired from Rock Spring Elementary School with 30 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucky L. and Lena Agnew Clarkson; husband of 66 years, Robert M. (Bob) Coulter Jr.; son, Robert M. (Mitch) Coulter III, and sisters, Frances Wilkinson and Loiuse Holsomback.
Survivors include her son, Eugene Coulter and daughter-in-law, Carolyn Coulter; daughter-in-law, Myra Coulter; grandchildren, Robert Marvin Coulter, Eugene Coulter Jr., Eric Coulter and Michelle Coulter; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Eulalah Luninia Perkins, 84, Chattanooga, Tenn.
Eulalah Luninia Perkins of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011. She was 84.
She was born to the late Ras A. and Myrtle Ella Perkins in Mentone, Ala. She graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1945, attended Oklahoma A&M University from 1945-1948, and worked as a secretary for International Machinist Union in Atlanta.
Survivors include her sister, Doris Hurling of Ovid, Ohio; brothers, Grady W. Perkins of Denver, Colo., and Morris Perkins of Burns, Wy., and many nieces and nephews.

Betty Murray Culberson, 78, Rossville
Betty Murray Culberson of Rossville died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011. She was 78.
She had lived in the Rossville area for most of her life and was a member of Mountain View Church of Christ. She was previously employed with Erlanger and Hutcheson Medical Center for many years as an ER registration clerk. She raised boxers, rottweilers and collies and was a lifetime member of the Chattanooga Kennel Club. She was also very involved with the Chattanooga Humane Society and raised funds in support of the Pilot Dog School Program.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Bonnie Murray.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Todd (Emily) Culberson of Ooltewah, Tenn.; sisters, Vickie Vaughn and Debbie Avans, both of Rossville; brothers, Gary Murray of LaFayette and Bill Murray of Ringgold; grandson, Noah Todd Culberson, and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas “Tom” Gordon Land of Tunnel Hill died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at a local hospital. He was 79.
A lifelong resident of the Ringgold area, he was a former employee of Lancer Enterprises and attended New Friendship Primitive Baptist Church in Ringgold.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Spradlin Land; parents, Thomas and Alma Plott Land; sister, Martha McDonald, and two brothers, J.C. and Elbert Land.

Zonnie Bell Payne Little of Ringgold, lovingly known as “Big Granny”, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, surrounded by her family. She was 82.

Richard Dennis Stinson, 74, Ringgold
Richard Dennis Stinson of Ringgold died Friday, Aug. 12, 2011. He was 74.
Mr. Stinson was a lifelong resident of the north Georgia area and retired from the U.S. Army after 38 years of service, having served during the Korean Conflict, Vietnam and the Desert Storm Gulf War. Richard was a recipient of the Legion of Merit Award. He was the co-owner and operator of Ringgold Art and Frame Company for 15 years. He was a member of Fort Oglethorpe First Baptist Church for 35 years, where he served as an usher.
He was preceded in death by his father, Hershel Stinson.

Charlotte Hullett Blalock of Fort Oglethorpe died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at her residence surrounded by her family. She was 71.
She was the daughter of the late Wallace and Zenade Race Hullett and was a lifelong resident of the Rossville area. Charlotte and her late husband, Willard “Bill” Blalock, owned Charlotte’s Mobile Home Park for over 30 years. She loved to travel, especially to the beaches, enjoying the water and also loved a good bargain. Charlotte attended Central High School and was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sgt. Willard W. “Bill” Blalock.

Miriam Victoria Mattson Lyon, 80, Rome
Miriam Victoria Mattson Lyon of Rome died Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, in LaFayette. She was 80.
She was born Aug. 14, 1930, in Concord, Mass., daughter of the late Miriam Victoria Nurmi Mattson and Victor Mattson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond S. Lyon.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rome for 38 years and sang in the choir for 35 years. She was also a member of the Rome Symphony Choir and the New Romans Club.
Survivors include four children, Dr. Victoria Lyon Lane and her husband, Wade Lane, of Destin, Fla., Cynthia Lyon Smith and her husband, Randall Smith, of Twin City, Rebecca Lyon Teems, and her husband, Billy Teems, of LaFayette, and Jeffrey A. Mr. John Joseph “Joe” Strange of Rossville died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at his residence. He was 48.
Mr. Strange was born March 25, 1963, in Miami, Fla., the son of Raymond Wesley Strange and the late Emma Maxine Helton Strange. He was formerly employed at Hayes HCI.
In addition to his mother, Strange was preceded in death by a brother, Ricky Strange.

Sallie Hardin Taylor, 99, Rossville
Sallie Hardin Taylor of Rossville died Monday, Aug. 15, 2011, at her residence. She was 99.
She was a native of Howe, Okla., and had lived in the north Georgia area for the past 94 years. She was a daughter of the late Jolly Joseph and Hester Brand Hardin. Mrs. Taylor was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Rossville and had worked at the Richman Hoisery Mill and Peerless for many years. She loved traveling to the Smokey Mountains for a nice getaway.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Taylor, in 2006.
Survivors are her loving daughter Leona Dunn of Rossville; son, Bob Cobb of Ringgold; grandchildren, James Dunn of Hixson, Gwen Cox of Ringgold, Steven Dunn of LaFayette and Glenn Dunn of Rossville; and several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
