Walker County commissioner Bebe Heiskell has signed an intergovernmental agreement between Walker County and the Department of Natural Resources to help with the construction of a new outdoor trail at Davis Crossroads.

Walker County received a transportation enhancement grant to create a new trailhead at Davis Crossroads and to renovate the old Shaw Barn, to which the trail will connect.

“We’re going to take that property and develop the trail along the old road,” said Heiskell. “The old barn will be the trailhead for people to park.”

Plans for the trail include an interpretive site near the start of the trail and a simple camping area at the Shaw Barn. The short trail will run parallel to Ga. 193 and will connect Davis Crossroads with the existing Estelle Camp-ground and trailhead, eventually leading out into the Mountain Cove area.

“We’ve been holding out on this because we didn’t want to have to pay any more insurance and now we’re not, so we’re okay,” said Heiskell.

The DNR grant, and the newly signed intergovernmental agreement, will cover the cost of the project with no penalties to the county.
