Norman Lynn Stone, 72, Ringgold
Norman Lynn Stone of Ringgold died Saturday, Sept. 9, 2011, at his residence. He was 72.
Mr. Stone was a lifelong resident of north Georgia and member of Battlefield Parkway Church of the Nazarene. After receiving a B.S. in mathematics, he taught mathematics at Ringgold High School for seven years. Mr. Stone then became the clerk of the Superior Court for Catoosa County, where he served for 44 years. He was the longest-serving official in an elected position in the county. He had served as the clerk of the Superior Court of Catoosa County since 1967.
The Office of Clerk of Superior Court is one of the most difficult offices in county government. He distinguished himself in this complex constitutional office by doing much more than was required of him by law. Under his supervision, public records required to be maintained by Clerk of Court were meticulously indexed and filed. He worked with the Superior Court judges to make sure that trials for each term of court had juries to try the cases for the term. Mr. Stone was an excellent steward of public funds allocated to him to operate the Clerk’s Office. During his tenure as clerk, he operated within his budget and each year returned unused funds allocated to him for his office to the county.
Norman Stone was one of the most respected officials in the history of Catoosa County. He never faced opposition in an election, most likely due to his work ethic and his love for the people of the county he served.
He was a sincere and dedicated Christian, enjoying Christian music every morning in the office prior to the time of opening. His booming voice at the reading of jury verdicts was something that had to be experienced in order to be fully appreciated. Mr. Stone will be long remembered for his outstanding public service to Catoosa County and Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Bernard Stone and Basil Stone, and sister, Patricia Pressley.
