With coats, blankets, and mittens in full force, citizens and officials from Catoosa and Walker counties turned to Benton Place campus in Ringgold Friday night, Nov. 11, to honor the country’s veterans while bringing recognition to the citizens and veterans of the year from both counties.
On a chilly night, nearly 100 people huddled around the Catoosa Citizens and Veterans Memorial as part of the eighth annual “Tribute to America” celebration.
Ringgold mayor Joe Barger was recognized as Catoosa County’s Patriotic Citizen of the Year, while former Catoosa County commissioner Ken Marks was honored as Catoosa’s Veteran of the Year.
“It’s very rewarding, and I’m very thankful for this day and this award,” Barger said.
Walker County recognized state Sen. Jeff Mullis of Chickamauga as its Citizen of the Year, with Jerry W. Haymons honored as the county’s Veteran of the Year.
Veteran Larry Hester also presented Outstanding Community Service awards to the counties for community service demonstrated following the April 27 tornados that struck the area.
“This is a great day to honor our citizens and veterans who’ve endured hardships and made sacrifices for our country and our community,” said Catoosa County commissioner Keith Greene. “Those who defend our country are often ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary things.”
