Forcing a second championship after a five-inning, 13-2, run-rule victory, Whitfield County took advantage of an overturned double play call in the bottom of the fifth inning of Game 2 and claimed the 8-under district title with a 13-11 victory.
Sunday’s action began with the Rossville Storm doubling up LaFayette, 12-6, but Whitfield County would calm the Storm, 14-6, in the losers’ bracket finals a short time later.
After cruising to an easy win in the first game, Whitfield found itself trailing 5-0 after the first half-inning of Game 2.
But they would rally to score three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame and added two runs in the second inning to knot the game, 5-5.
Both teams would put up four runs in the third, and the score would remain tied, 10-10, after each plated solo runs in the fourth.
Whitfield County would turn a 4-3 double play in the top of the fifth, but the Stars would score on the play to take a one-run lead into the home half of the fifth.
Whitfield would put the lead runner on first to start the inning, but the Stars’ first baseman caught an infield pop-up and raced to the bag to double up the runner.
The runner was called out to complete the double play, but Whitfield’s coach asked for help from the home plate umpire, leading to a discussion. The call at first was eventually overturned, drawing cheers and boos from opposite sides of the bleachers.
The runner at first would later score on a two-out, two-run hit that gave Whitfield a 13-11 lead.
The Stars would also get the lead-off runner on first to open the top of the sixth, but she was doubled up at first following a pop-up to shortstop, and another infield pop-up one batter later would end the game.
The scene will shift to Chickamauga for the Dizzy Dean State Softball Tournament, which get underway on June 29.
