A LaFayette woman faces two felony counts of fraudulently cashing checks.

According to LaFayette Police Department reports:

Amber Nicole (Queen) Mitchell of North Duke Street was arrested June 25 for first-degree forgery and theft by taking.

She allegedly took a checkbook belonging to the estate of a deceased elderly woman.

The five checks, which totaled $1,310, were cashed at Shop Rite in LaFayette between May 1 and June 14.

Jewelry items valued at $725 were also missing.

Mitchell allegedly had the items melted down at a local business, which later confirmed that Mitchell had brought the items in.

She confessed to taking the checks and jewelry, stating that she even signed the signatures at the store, according to Kelley.

Mitchell has been charged with two felonies for forgery and theft by taking.
