A Rossville man was arrested after he was allegedly driving erratically down Battlefield Parkway in Fort Oglethorpe while in possession of a firearm, then later gave a false name during questioning.

According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department:

Dennis Dean Ammerman, 56, of Ga. 341 in Rossville was arrested Friday, Aug. 24, on charges of firearm possession by a convicted felon, driving while license suspended, false information to an officer, and improper lane change. He has been released from jail on bond.

Officers caught up with Ammerman just after 9 a.m. on Aug. 24.

“The offender (Ammerman) was observed driving west on Battlefield Parkway in an erratic manner, and changing lanes several times without using a signal,” said officer Jeff Holcomb. “Upon making contact with the offender, I asked him for his driver’s license, and he stated that he did not have one.”

During questioning, it was discovered that Ammerman had given officer Holcomb a false last name, reports show.

“I later found out that the he gave me a wrong last name,” Holcomb said. “After we ran the correct last name, it showed that his license was suspended out of Tennessee.”

Detective James Leamon, who was also on the scene, found a firearm in the vehicle near Ammerman, reports show.

“We checked his criminal history and found that he was convicted felon,” Holcomb said.

Ammerman was transported to Catoosa County jail without incident, while the vehicle Ammerman was driving and the gun were turned over to the rightful owner.
