GOVERNMENT · There will be a Walker County Commissioner's meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in the Commissioner's conference room, in LaFayette.

COMMUNITY · Friends of the La-Fayette-Walker Public Library will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at the library on Main Street (in old Food Lion building) in LaFayette. The library closes and locks the doors at 7 p.m. sharp, so pleas arrive early. New business will be to name a nomination committee to nominate officers for the 2013 year.

COMMUNITY · United Way’s Volunteer Center is working to recruit groups of volunteers for two projects in North Georgia for the 23nd Annual Day of Caring on Thursday, Sept. 13. This year’s event also ties in with the nationwide “9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service,” an event focused on turning tragedy into triumph by honoring the victims of the 9/11 tragedy and their families by voluntarily engaging in charitable service in observance of the anniversary. The Volunteer Center still needs the community’s help to find groups of volunteers for projects in North Georgia, including tornado clean-up at the Boy Scout meeting hall in Trenton, and renovations and construction at Heartland/Spirit Horse Therapeutic Riding Center for individuals with developmental and physical disabilities, in Flintstone. COMMUNITY · The Walker County Chamber of Commerce will host the 2012 Membership Appreciation Day with a theme of “All-American: Olympic Gold” at noon Friday, Sept. 14, at the Walker County Agricultural Center in Rock Spring. COMMUNITY · Tryouts will be held in LaFayette for an all-female football team. The North Georgia Thrashers are a new women’s football team trying to gain approval into the Women’s Football Alliance. All tryouts are at LaFayette High School at 10 a.m. every Saturday in September and the first two Saturdays in October. The team is accepting women of all shapes and sizes and ages 18 and older. COMMUNITY · Waterville Baptist Youth will host a Fishing and Corn Maze Benefit from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Thomas Dairy Farm on Halls Valley Drive in Trion. Admission is $10 per person or $25 for a family of four. Price includes Cornmaze, all day fishing, and a hotdog plate with drink. COMMUNITY · A six-and-a-half-hour blacksmithing seminar will be held from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, in the Robert E. Chambers Interpretive Center and on the grounds at the Chief Vann House State Historic Site in Chatsworth. The seminar includes three hours of instruction and three hours of forge demonstrations.
