Rossville shuts out Ringgold in NGAC football opener

The Rossville Middle School Bulldogs got their 2012 football season off to a very successful start on Thursday as they traveled to Ringgold and thumped the Tigers, 34-0.

Jalyn Shelton scored on runs of 21 and 40 yards. He finished with 73 yards on just four carries. He also helped spur the defense from his linebacker position, collecting six tackles and getting credit for a pass break-up.

Hunter McKenzie had a big day for the Bulldogs, making eight tackes, two sacks, and blocking two punts. He also rushed three times for 33 yards.

One of the blocked punts was returned for a touchdown by linebacker Christopher Henderson, who had six tackles and added a 19-yard TD run on offense.

Grayson Moore had 34 yards rushing on just two carries, and hauled in a key 23-yard reception to help keep a drive going. Samuel Oliver had a 52-yard punt return for a score and added five tackles on defense.

Linemen Ryan Heath and Luke Edwards also had big games. Heath finished with six tackles and Edwards recorded one sack.

In the junior varsity game, Rossville fell by an 8-6 count. Jacob Brock, Noah Jeffery, Jerrick Cook led the Rossville defensive effort while Cody Holland and Desmond Johnson were standouts on offense.

Rossville (1-0) will play this Thursday at LaFayette (0-1). Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
