For the third year the 6th Calvary Museum, located on Barnhardt Circle in Fort Oglethorpe, is hosting “Remem-bering Our Heroes.”

The event will be held Oct. 12-13 on the circle’s Polo Field. Again this year the museum welcomes World War II and Axis Forces.

Among the events will be two World War II battle reenactments with authentic vehicles, weapons, and mock fir-ings. Allied and Axis re-enactors will highlight the long and enduring military history of Fort Oglethorpe’s Army Post (1902-46).

The weekend is an event of living history and remembrance of the Armed Forces. While the battle reenactments are from World War II era, static displays of equipment and living historians will be from all time periods.

“We wanted ‘Remembering Our Heroes’ to represent all branches of service and time periods,” said Kyle Rus-sell, museum board president. “Our military heritage will be displayed on a grand scale with something of interest for everyone.”

This year’s event will again feature Denny Hair, internationally known for his portrayal of Gen. George S. Patton. Accompanying Hair will be the Third Army Living Historians from Houston, Texas.

This group has studied all the battles the Third Army fought, along with conditions they fought under, as well as all their various strategies and equipment. The group members’ extensive knowledge allows them to utilize all the proper uniforms, equipment and vehicles. They are able to authentically recreate and reenact the period, bringing history alive to worldwide audiences.

Hair has portrayed Patton since 1984 and has been featured in movies, plays and even musicals. He has ap-peared at active-duty military bases, veterans’ reunions, parades, museums and local and federal government events

“I have studied the general for 30 years and read just about everything ever written about him. I want my por-trayals to give a keen insight into who he really was, while authentically dressed and equipped,” Hair said.

Among the fun things planned is the return of the “Stuff on a Shingle," more commonly known as “S.O.S.” Cook-off. Local restaurants and chefs will offer their version of the military mainstay of creamed gravy and chipped beef over toast to the public and celebrity judges for sampling. Awards will be given in the People’s Choice and Judge’s Favorite categories. Sampling is on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m., with the winners announced at 3 p.m. that day.

Music for the day will be Big Band era performed from the Post’s original bandstand complete with 1940s Holly-wood personalities.

On Friday there will be a School Day program that includes everything except the battle reenactment and the SOS cook-off. That day begins at 9 a.m. and goes through 1 p.m. Students will see what it was like to be a World War II soldier and experience living history displays, along with authentic weapons, demonstrations, and vehicles. Also included will be a tour of the museum. Admission will be $2 per student with teachers and bus drivers entering for free.

Scouts are cordially invited to attend on Saturday and will be given the special admission price of $2, with adult leaders getting in for $5 when wearing their Scout uniform shirt.

The opening ceremony is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday, with the battle reenactments beginning at 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Admission for the day’s activities is $10 per adult, $5 for military veterans, students and senior citizens over 62. Junior ROTC in uniform is $2. Children under 5 are free.
