“Parents love to bring their children here because it gives them a safe secure place for their children to trick-or-treat, and business owners like it because they can have fun and decorate the front of their stores,” said George Gilbert, vice president of the Bank of LaFayette. “Every year, Scare on the Square is special. It gives us (the merchants) a chance as a community to pull together and have some fun. Scare on the Square is wholesome entertainment for the whole family.”
Candy will be handed out to trick-or-treaters in what has become a tradition in the Walker County city. Merchants in downtown LaFayette transform the front of their stores and employees don Halloween garb while families trick-or-treat around the blocked off square.
The Bank of LaFayette and LaFayette Main Street Downtown Development Authority are sponsoring this year’s event, including supplying the candy.
Scare On The Square began in the 1970s. LaFayette’s Joe Stock started giving candy to children in front of The Boston Store clothing store every Halloween. As the years passed, other business’ joined. Soon after, Mr. Stock organized the first Scare On The Square. The event took on a life of its own, when owners and employees decorated the fronts of their stores.
Last year, more than 2,300 visited downtown and more than 30 merchants participated.
