The city of Ringgold will host a Veteran’s Day celebration featuring the Jericho Brass on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m. as part of its annual Fall Festival of Flags.

The free event at the Ringgold Depot will feature a patriotic performance by the 28-piece traditional British-style brass band. Frank Hale will direct.

The event is sponsored by the Ringgold Downtown Development Authority. Seating is available, but bring a seat cushion.

“The Jericho Brass is an all-volunteer ensemble, Jericho Brass is made up of professional and college-trained musicians from the tri-state area,” said Jean Dickinson, Jericho Brass publicity coordinator. “The group performs regularly at civic functions, churches, schools and other public venues.”

She said smaller outreach groups from the Jericho membership also perform at nursing homes, school assemblies, churches and libraries.

According to Dickinson, the instrumentation includes cornets, flugelhorn, tenor horns, baritone horns, trombones, euphoniums, tubas and percussion.

“In addition to the traditional brass band literature, Jericho Brass performs marches, orchestral transcriptions, popular tunes, hymns, and sacred selections, as well as patriotic favorites,” she said.

The band has performed all across the south, including concerts in Memphis, Tenn., Greenville, S.C., Charleston, W.V., and Atlanta, plus two concert tours to England performing in Huddersfield, Bournemouth, London and Dublin, Ireland.

The group is always looking for talented musicians to join in the fun.

“Not all chairs in Jericho Brass are full,” she said. “We welcome competent brass and percussion players of reasonable experience to consider joining the band. The music is challenging, and regular practice and attendance at weekly rehearsals is required. The musical awards are considerable, and the fellowship among the members is warm and friendly.”

Ringgold’s Festival of Flags is displayed twice a year and honors the deceased veterans of Catoosa County. Each flag represents one county resident who has died that served in the military.

The local Veteran of Foreign Wars post started the flag tradition more than 30 years ago to honor veterans who have died. The project is now stewarded by Ringgold through the help of volunteers from around the county.
