A LaFayette couple was arrested in Fort Oglethorpe after the two were caught stealing electronics from the K-Mart on Battlefield Parkway where they both worked.

According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department:

David Jacob Henegar, 17, and Cherish Rebekah Townsend, 20, both of 358 Ga. 151 in LaFayette, were arrested on Sunday, Nov. 11, and both were charged with theft.

Officers responded to the K-Mart at 526 Ga. 2 (Battlefield Parkway) a little after 8 p.m. after store employees reported the theft.

One employee stated seeing Henegar stealing items beginning on Friday, Nov. 9, reports show.

"The employee stated that he observed Henegar removing several electronic tablets from the lay-a-way area," officer Matthew Ray said. "He stated that Henegar then took the tablets to his girlfriend Cherish Townsend, and they put them into her purse. I was advised that about an hour later, Townsend exited the store with the stolen merchandise in her purse without attempting to pay for it."

Over the three-day period, the couple allegedly stole $1,179 worth of merchandise from within the store with only about $480 of it recovered, reports show.

"After agreeing to speak to me about the incident, Henegar admitted to attempting to steal the four tablets today (Sunday), and to stealing other items from the store on Friday and Saturday," Ray said. "He stated that he had taken the items out of their original boxes and sold them to raise money for a lawyer."

Henegar went on to tell police that the money was needed for a lawyer to help Cherish Townsend regain custody of her son.

"He further stated Sunday was the first time Townsend had assisted him in stealing items from the store," Ray said. "Henegar admitted to sealing one tablet on Friday, and on Saturday stole another tablet and a PlayStation 3, which he sold."

Townsend stated that she did not want to speak on the matter until she had the chance to consult with a lawyer, reports show.
