A LaFayette restaurateur plans to open his doors to the community on Christmas Day.

Key Koukos, the owner of Twins Pizza and Steaks, decided to pay homage to his late son, Chris Koukos, who died from a heart condition at age 31.

Key Koukos said his son was an athlete and seemingly healthy until his heart condition was diagnosed. Koukos said his son died just three months after receiving the diagnosis.

“I wanted to do it for years, then I lost my son five years ago,” Koukos said. He had planned to retire and pass the restaurant on to his son until his untimely death in January 2008.

Though the heartache of loss is a reminder each holiday season, Koukos plans to “just give back” to people as a gesture of goodwill in the friendly manner his son was known for.

He has seen how people struggle in recent years locally and for decades in his homeland of Greece, which currently has nearly 26 percent unemployment.

“I know (that) people suffer,” Koukos said. “You see the unemployment and no new jobs.”

He became a U.S. citizen in the 1970s and has had four restaurant ventures in the LaFayette area, with Twins Pizza and Steaks approaching 20 years in the community.

The restaurant will be open on Christmas Day “to anyone that needs a meal” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., serving a lunch with a spaghetti, lasagna and pizza bar.

Key and Mary and his kids have been personal friends of ours for over 30 years. Many people don't understand what a sweet and giving man he is because he sometimes comes out as as bear but he really isn't. He has a heart of gold and would help at the drop of a hat. His son Chris was the sweetest and nicest guy you would ever want to meet. His big beautiful smile would light up a room when he entered it. We miss him! I hope all those that are in need will go have a hot meal with Key tomorrow and show him your support throughout the year. Kudos Key for this unselfish gesture. Merry Christmas and Happy New years!

I personally know this man....he is a wonderful person with a huge heart...I also knew his son and he was just like his father....This man is an inspiration to all of us. To show that his simple act of kindness does not go unappreciated we should all patronize his business on a regular basis. I pray that Key and his family are blessed with a very Merry Christmas and that God brings him a very Happy New Year.....

With this story being all I know about Mr. Koukos, his restaurant, and his son, I feel I can safely say that they are all credits to the community, and America.

I thank you for realizing that some do really need help every once in a while. I believe the kindness you are doing in the name of your son is an inspiration and lesson to us all.

I hope your kindness is returned a hundredfold.
