Walker County welcomed two new school board members Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Karen Stoker and Dale Wilson were elected in November, taking the seats held by Jim Smith and Patti Hart, both of whom opted not to run for re-election.

Walker County probate judge Christy Anderson conducted the oath of office for Stoker and Wilson.

Stoker has previously been an educator for 33 years and retired from the Walker school system last year.

Nearly two dozen friends and family witnessed the two board members take their oath of office.

Board member Phyllis Hunter was then nominated to serve as the chair of the school board by the previous chair, Mike Carruth, for a one-year term. The board unanimously approved her. She has previously served as chair a few years ago.

Hunter said he is optimistic that the board will “continue to work well together in the same professional manner.”

Board member Susan Wells then nominated Carruth as the vice chair on the board.
