A Dunlap, Tenn., man was recently charged with shoplifting in Fort Oglethorpe after he allegedly attempted to sell the stolen property minutes after the theft occurred.

According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department:

James Wesley Webb II, 21, of Quary Road in Dunlap, Tenn., was arrested on Jan. 30 on a charge of theft by shoplifting, and has since been released from jail on bond.

Officers were dispatched to the Wal-Mart at 3040 Ga. 2 (Battlefield Parkway) in Fort Oglethorpe around 8 p.m. on Jan. 30 in regards to a shoplifting call involving two white males.

“While en-route to the scene, dispatch advised that the males had left Wal-Mart and were at Game Stop trying to sell the stolen items,” officer Michael Fergerson said. “When I arrived at Game Stop, I spoke with a Wal-Mart employee who stated that he observed the two males take memory cards out of the packages and put them in their pocket. He also stated that they left the store without paying for the items and he followed them to Game Stop where he observed them trying to sell the items.”

When questioned, Webb told officers that he was only at the Game Stop to look at games, reports show.

“I asked Mr. Webb if he had been to the Wal-Mart, and he stated that they purchased a drink from outside the store, but did not go inside,” Fergerson said. “I then told him that the store had video of him stealing items. I asked him again what he was doing, and he stated that he was trying to get some money for tobacco and did something really stupid.”

The stolen property was recovered and returned to Wal-Mart, while Webb was placed under arrest and transported to Catoosa County jail without incident.

The second male involved with the theft was actually a teenage juvenile, and the store did not press charges on him.

The boy was turned over to his father after police notified him of the incident.
