Fort Oglethorpe police are looking for a Rossville man who ran away from the scene of a traffic stop, involving drugs and a gun, during the early morning hours of Wednesday, Feb. 27.

According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, when officer William Palmer conducted a routine traffic stop after observing a 1990 Ford F-150 truck traveling along Cloud Springs Road with a faulty taillight.

During the stop, one of the two men in the vehicle broke away from police and led officers on a foot chase, before ultimately getting away.

The three officers involved with the incident sustained minor injuries during the chase, reports show.

Brandon Taylor Harper, 32, of McDonald Drive in Rossville was arrested on charges of possession of tools for the commission of a crime, giving false statements in matters within jurisdiction of the state, giving a false name or address to law enforcement, obstruction or hindering law enforcement, suspended or revoked license, and a taillight violation. His bond was set at $13,500.

The wanted offender, 34-year-old Casey Brent Barnes of Tallent Road in Rossville is wanted on similar charges to the ones Harper was booked for.

Barnes is listed as being 5 feet, 11 inches tall with brown hair and blue eyes.

During the traffic stop, officers say that Harper, who was driving, gave false information regarding his name and his driver’s license.

“When I asked for Mr. Harper’s driver’s license, he advised me that he did not have it with him,” Palmer said. “I asked for his (Harper’s) name and date of birth, to which he stated his name was Brandon Harvey.”

Harper’s license turned out to be suspended out of Tennessee.

Officers also discovered during questioning that the duo had a handheld scanner on the dashboard along with several tools, reports show.

“Mr. Harper and his passenger, Casey Barnes, both appeared to be nervous and fidgety,” Palmer said.

After requesting the assistance of additional officers to the scene, Harper’s real name was discovered and he was placed under arrest on multiple charges.

Officers then got a little more than they bargained for when attempting to gather information on Barnes.

“While patting Mr. Barnes down for weapons, he broke free of my grip and ran through several yards,” Williams said. “I gave chase while yelling verbal commands for him to stop.”

Williams also unsuccessfully discharged his taser at Barnes while trying to stop him, reports show.

Barnes was able to elude officers after jumping multiple chain-linked fences.

Officers later inventoried the vehicle and discovered two glass crack pipes, in addition to a Norinco 7.62-millimeter pistol and the handheld scanner.

Officer Palmer stated that he suffered injuries to both of his hands after jumping a fence that was barbed along the top, while two other officers sustained injuries to their shoulders and ribs after losing their footing and falling on the road.
