Georgia first lady Sandra Deal is scheduled to visit Battlefield Primary on today, March 5.

Deal’s visit is part of her “Read Across America,” Catoosa County superintendent of schools Denia Reese said, during a school board work session on Feb. 28.

The first lady is scheduled to be at the school from 10:50 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to read both a book and a poem to the pre-kindergarten class. Reese said, “We are very excited about this visit.”

Reese also announced that all schools in the county would soon be undergoing their annual school safety assessment. Schools will be following Department of Education guidelines, as they assess their individual lock-down procedures.

Director of facilities Doug Suits, along with sheriff’s deputy Kenneth Hooten, are working on the schedule and what exactly the assessments will entail.

In other business, the Board of Education’s current fund balance is $18,786,028, according to figures released at the work session. This comes on the tail of Jan. 31 year-to-date receipts of $47,814,054 and expenditures of $39,803,743. The school system is 58 percent through its budget year.

Suits announced that capital projects had a fund balance of $29,366,938, with $6,657,570 in total revenues. ESPLOST (education special-purpose local-option sales tax) are just over $866,000 for the budget year.

Suits also announced that the roof to the new gymnasium at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School would be lifted into place on March 6.
