Police are looking into thefts at the construction site of Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School’s new gymnasium.

According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department, a theft occurred between 6:30 p.m. on March 14 and 7 a.m. on March 15, in which construction materials were taken from the site.

The theft included approximately $600 worth of steel angle, some of which was galvanized.

The five steel pieces, that are 4-inches by 4-inches wide and 10-feet long, were taken from the gated area on the backside of the gym.

An employee with EMJ Construction, which is over the project, told police there had been previous thefts during the construction process but that they were not reported.

According to Lt. Steve Blevins, a similar metal theft occurred on Tuesday, March 19, at a townhouse at Sunset Cove off Prater Road.

“The incident at Sunset Cove consisted of two males stealing metal from the townhouse and then fleeing the scene,” Blevins said.

The theft included steel rebar rods and other various pieces of scrap metal.

Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two white males leaving the scene in a 1996 Maroon Ford Explorer, reports show.

The total estimated value of the stolen metal is approximately $100.

“Crimes like this usually happen in spurts,” Blevins said. “It’s similar to the catalytic converter thefts that were taking place a few months ago. People look for things that are quick and easy to steal so that they can turn around and sell them for some quick cash. In both of these cases, offenders probably took the metals right to the scrap yard.”

Anyone with information regarding the thefts in either case is encouraged to contact the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department at 706-866-2512.
