Construction work will begin next month on the second highway project in Northwest Georgia funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The project includes more than three miles of resurfacing on Main Street — Ga. 1 — in LaFayette in Walker County.
The resurfacing of Interstate 575 in Cherokee and Cobb counties was the first federal stimulus package project to receive the notice to proceed in the 17 counties of Northwest Georgia. Work on that project began the third week of last month.
Work on the Walker County project will start Sept. 8, with crews scheduled on site Tuesdays through Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Crews also will work through the weekends, from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.
Georgia department of Transportation spokesman Mohamed Arafa said the plan is intended to minimize the impact of construction on traffic in the city of Lafayette.
The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of April 2010, at a construction cost of $687,392.
Work on the seven other ARRA-funded projects in Northwest Georgia is expected to begin later this fall, Arafa said.
They range from adding turn lanes on U.S. 41 in Bartow County and resurfacing Highway 140 in Cherokee County, to improving the intersection of Battlefield Parkway and Pine Grove Road in Catoosa County, and replacing the bridge on County Line Road over Polecat Creek on line between Gordon and Murray counties.
