According to Catoosa County Sheriff Phil Summers, the incident occurred about 11:20 p.m. at the Favorite Market located at the corner of Hwy. 41 and Graysville Road.
Two men driving a gray Ford F-150 pickup backed through the store’s front doors and exited the truck, attempting to steal an Amsouth Bank ATM machine from inside the store.
“After stealing only the electrical component of the ATM machine, they fled the scene, traveling northbound on Graysville Road,” Summers said.
The thieves, who fled without any money, unknowingly failed to take the ATM’s storage compartment, which houses the safe, Summers said.
The sheriff said the truck’s driver was described by witnesses as a young man, tall with a slender build, and clad in a green and gray checked shirt.
His accomplice was described as an older man.
“It is believed that the subjects are local,” Summers said. “We are asking for the assistance of the public to provide the sheriff’s office with any information which may lead to the arrest of these two individuals.”
Summers said there was no surveillance camera at the store at the time of the incident.
The truck reportedly received extensive damage to its rear during impact with the storefront, he said.
Because the theft involved an ATM machine, the Rossville office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Department in its ongoing investigation, Summers said.
