Georgia has selected the first batch of transportation projects for funding through the federal stimulus package.
The state Transportation Board on Thursday approved 135 separate projects valued at more than $512 million. Georgia is expected to use $932 million in stimulus funds for road, bridge and other infrastructure projects.
Contracts will be awarded beginning in April with work expected to start in June.
Northwest Georgia counties that received funding for Phase 1 projects include Bartow, Catoosa, Gordon, Polk and Walker. Floyd County expects to get some projects included in the Phase 2 announcement later this spring.
The projects will be funded completely by the federal government. No state or local matching funds are required. The stimulus money is designed to jump start the economy by putting people to work.
