About 15 percent of Walker County’s registered voters cast ballots in the primary elections, according to the elections office.

The ballots included four contested local races, plus a SPLOST vote on whether to continue a one-cent sale tax for government.

The county has 40,064 registered voters, which includes 34,585 “active” voters and 5,479 “”inactive” voters. “Inactive” voters are those who have not voted in the past two general elections or in the most recent election.

A total of 6,102 people cast ballots for the primaries in Walker County. Of that number, 1,020 people cast early votes, while 5,082 cast ballots on election day on Tuesday. Early votes include absentee and advance ballots, all of which were cast in the weeks prior to election day.

If one considers only Walker County voters who are deemed "active," then voter turnout for the primaries was about 17.6 percent.

In neighboring Catoosa County, voter turnout for "active" voters was a little more than 11 percent.
