Walker County Board of Education recently recognized many students and teachers for their accomplishments during the past school year.
The school board, during its regular monthly meeting Monday night, recognized Walker 4-H Club members their Cloverleaf District Project Achievement. The fifth-graders presented different agriculture-related projects during a competition at Floyd College in Rome.
Ridgeland High School band members who earned all-district recognition in Cartersville were recognized, as well as some students who were selected for the University of Georgia Honor Band.
Four groups of students from Chattanooga Valley Middle School were recognized for their accomplishments. The academic team won the northwest Georgia RESA Region III championship for the third year in a row. The varsity baseball team and golf team each won the championship at the North Georgia Athletic Conference. The technology student association excelled at a state competition at the state fairgrounds in Perry, placing first, second, third, and fifth.
Two students of LaFayette Middle School were recognized for being invited to a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington Cemetery in Washington D.C.
The board also noted the Distinguished Teachers of the Year from each school and recognized Rossville Middle School educator Maggie Stewart as system-wide Teacher of the Year.
In other business:
- The board approved a comprehensive plan for special education for next school year.
- The board approved vocational and agricultural educational plans for next school year.
- The board approved a memorandum of understanding with Georgia Department of Community Health reflecting some changes in the ongoing agreement.
- The board approved the sex and AIDS education materials for next school year.
- The board and school attorney will peruse changes to the Internet acceptable use policy and discuss at the June meeting.
- The board chose business partners to sit on several school councils. John Eldridge of Wilson’s Funeral Home was appointed to North LaFayette Elementary School. Robert Hitchcox of Coca-Cola was appointed to Ridgeland High School, and Bobby Emerling of State Farm Insurance was appointed to Rossville Middle School. Those schools will choose a second business partner this month for their respective school councils.
- The board awarded a bid to Cane Creek Trading Co. to remove old trailers and coolers from school property. The company will pay the school system $175 for the items.
- The board awarded a $50,081 to Savin Corp. for duplicator paper.
The next scheduled school board meeting is for its planning session on Tuesday, June 4, at 7 p.m. in the central office at 201 S. Duke St., LaFayette
