Walker County authorities on Friday nabbed a Chattanooga man suspected of robbing businesses in Walker and Catoosa counties and in Chattanooga, Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson said.

Investigators believe Alfonzo J. Smith, 20, began a crime spree Wednesday night at the Conoco at 1750 LaFayette Road in Fort Oglethorpe, Wilson said.

From there, police say, Smith went on early Thursday morning to the Kangaroo convenience store in Flintstone, then the Krystal restaurant on Ringgold Road in East Ridge. Police allege his last robbery was Friday morning at Clifton Cleaners at 3710 Rossville Blvd. in Chattanooga.

Police issued a vehicle description after Smith allegedly cleaned out the cleaners, he said. A Walker County detective spotted Smith’s vehicle at the scene of the first crime, the Conoco on LaFayette Road. Catoosa deputies came to make the arrest and Smith was in the Catoosa jail on Friday afternoon.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a red toboggan in the trunk that was used as a disguise during the robberies, Wilson said. Also in the car were crack cocaine, marijuana and at least two handguns hidden under the hood in the engine compartment.
