Skate ‘n’ Play Family Fun Center, located about two miles outside LaFayette on Ga. 136 in the Naomi community, will host the camp that promises fun for children ages 5-12.
Ruth Pendergraft, spokesperson for Skate ‘n’ Play, said, “This is our first attempt. We are so very excited about it. We think the kids will have a great time.”
The day camp is scheduled to run the weeks of June 2, June 9, June 16, June 23, July 7, July 14 and July 21.
“The kids are invited to come by the entire week or by the day,” Pendergraft said.
Pendergraft said that during the week of July 4 the center plans an all-night skate.
The cost of the camp is $50 per week or $10 per day.
Pendergraft described the schedule of events slated each day.
“We have a schedule we are going to do that includes things like field day activities at the schools. We’ll have lots of games they’ll do in the morning hours before it gets hot. Then, they’ll have skate time and indoor playtime in the afternoon. Each day of the week, the kids will do one special event in the evening that will consist of either arts and crafts, live music, or some other activities. Also, there will be inflatables for the kids to play on.”
Pendergraft said the hours of the camp would be from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“The fliers say 4:30 p.m. but we are going to go until 5:30 p.m. because a lot of parents have to work until then,” Pendergraft said.
Chaperons for the children will not be needed since the center plans on having an entire staff of people available to oversee and work with the children.
“We have several individuals who will work the event that includes many people who work with children every day,” Pendergraft said.
“The kids will be divided into groups according to ages, with an individual who will work with each group so the kids can better participate in the games,” Pendergraft said.
A hot lunch and snacks will be provided as part of the cost for the camp.
Pendergraft said she hopes this year’s event will be a success.
“I’ve had quite a few calls,” Pendergraft said. “In fact we have put out over 3,000 fliers in Catoosa and Chattooga counties. We also have given out fliers here. Walker County schools don’t allow fliers in the schools. But we’ve put it on LaFayette radio and on banners across the county.”
Asked about the idea for the camp, Pendergraft said, “I saw other skating rinks do summer day camps on the Internet and so we thought we would give it a try.”
