Barbara Blevins, 68, Rossville


Barbara Jean Blevins of Rossville died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008 at her home. She was 68.

She was born in Hamilton County, Tenn., to the late James and Callie Griffin. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her son, Steve Blevins; sister, Yvonne Helton; brothers, James, Doug and Eddie Griffin.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Blevins; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jeannette Blevins; siblings, Betty Grisham, Linda Durham, Reba Guffey, Homer Griffin; many nieces and nephews; best friend, Irene Barrett and family, and many special friends.

Edith Hanscom, 92, East Brainerd, Tenn.


Edith M. Hanscom of East Brainerd, Tenn., died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008 at her residence. She was 92.

She lived most of her life in Chattanooga, Tenn., where she worked for Standard Coosa Thatcher, and also was a welder during World War II in Mississippi in the shipyard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Guvanus L. Hanscom; son, Jessie L. Brown; granddaughter, Sonya L. Morgan; five brothers; and two sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Jackie L. Brown of East Brainerd; three grandchildren, Marcy Caylor, Kimberly Ann Ricketts and Forrest D. Scott; four great-grandchildren, Shannon Cook, LeAnne Glover, Travis Ricketts and Lindsey Burns; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

DeWitt Kelley, 59, Rossville


DeWitt Kelley of Rossville died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008. He was 59.

DeWitt served in the United States Army, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Kelley; stepson, William Bankston; and granddaughter, Kelsey Fox.

Darlene Lang, 57, Rossville


Darlene Fay Goins Lang of Rossville died Friday, Dec. 12, 2008. She was 57.

She was born in San Diego, Calif., to the late Arnold and Violet Goins on April 3, 1951. She was a member of Spring Creek Church of God, and worked as a staffing coordinator for National Healthcare of Rossville. Darlene loved her church and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She was also preceded in death by her sister, Alma Louise Reed; three brothers, Arnold Newton Goins Jr., Gideon Harold Goins, and Charles J. Goins.

Survivors include her husband, William A. Lang Jr. of Rossville; her son and his fiancé, Billy Lang and Stephanie McGlone of Rossville; six sis-ters, Margaret Jones, Carolyn Boggenhome, Bobbie Knight, Diane Nigro, Phyllis Lang and Arlene Scroggins; five brothers, Jack, Douglas, Richard, Gary and Curtis Goins; several nieces and nephews.

Deloris Barkley Otting Pickard of Summerville died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008. She was 72.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Annie Narmore Barkley.

Debby Ransom of Rock Spring died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at her residence after a four-year battle with cancer. She was 55.

She was an active member of Oakwood Baptist Church and was employed with Catoosa Performance Learning Center. She volunteered with the FCA.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry Ransom; son, Jeremy Ransom of Rock Spring; daughter, Melissa (Joel) Jones of Chickamauga; mother, Blanche Pinkerton of Fort Oglethorpe; sister, Donna Hill of Bridgeport, Ala; grandchildren, Mallory and Meredith Jones.

Rev. Whitaker Shelton, 92, Chickamauga


Rev. Whitaker White Shelton of Chickamauga died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008 at a local hospital. He was 92.

He was retired after 42 years from active ministerial work in the Baptist faith and in the Virginia United Methodist Ministers Conference. He returned home to Chickamauga with his wife, Margaret Glenn Shelton where he became an associate minister in the retired status at Elizabeth Lee Methodist Church. After being ordained as a Baptist minister on July 19, 1941 and then receiving his degree from Carson-Newman College in 1942, he entered the military service and graduated from the Harvard School for Chaplains. He was then commissioned by the direction of the President to serve with the combat divisions in Europe. While serving as a chaplain in the 12th Armored Division during the Battle of the Bulge, he received the Bronze Star among several other medals. After World War II, he remained in the U.S. Army Reserve Chaplains Group, retiring as lieutenant colonel. Rev. Shelton also received his B.D. degree in 1949 from the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and in 1962 earned a Master of Education degree in guidance and counseling from the University of Chattanooga. He was born to the late Jacob and Isabel Keck Shelton on April 11, 1916 in Tazewell, Tenn., per his family Bible. He was the sixth in a family of 12 children who all spent their childhood in eastern Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Margaret Glenn Shelton.

Survivors include his sister, Lenoir Musser of Talbott, Tenn.; brother, Weyer J. Shelton of New Market, Tenn.; along with several nieces and nephews.

Services: Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with Rev. Larry Summerour and Rev. Chris Morgan presiding. Burial: Chickamauga Cemetery. Gladys Bevis, 98, Rossville


Gladys Callahan Bevis of Rossville died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at a local health care facility. She was 98.

A native of Dayton, Tenn., she was born Oct. 23, 1910 to the late Roe and Dora Wyatt Callahan. She worked for many years at the Peerless Cloth Store and retired from Mar-Mode Hosiery Mill. She was a charter member of Rossville Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, H.C. “Red” Bevis; brothers, Earl and Edd Callahan; and sister, Mary Ellen Hixson.

Survivors include her sister, Lucile Jeffress Sartin of Rossville; several nieces and nephews.

George “Toby” Snodgrass of Chickamauga died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008. He was 74.

He was born in Dade County to the late George and Anna Bell (Brown) Snodgrass.

He was preceded in death by his son, Steve Snodgrass; brother, William Snodgrass.

Barbara Jean Townsel of Rossville died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008 at her residence.

She was a native of Cleveland, Tenn., and lived most of her life in the Rossville and Fort Oglethorpe area. She retired in 1996 from K-Mart in East Ridge, Tenn., with 23 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy “Becky” Townsel; parents, William and Ollie Mae McCuiston; and brother, Billy Doyle McCuiston.

Roger Blackwell, 59, Fort Oglethorpe


Roger Lee Blackwell of Fort Oglethorpe died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008. He was 59.

He was a lifelong resident of North Georgia and was of the Baptist faith. He began a law enforcement career in 1971 as a dispatcher for Fort Oglethorpe Police Department, before working for numerous agencies including Catoosa County Sheriff’s Department, Chattanooga Police Department, Walker County Sheriff’s Department, as well as Post Volunteer Fire Department. He was also police chief of Rossville Police Department for nine years before his career at Hays State Prison.

Survivors include his parents, Glynn Blackwell and Jean Blackwell Massey; daughters, Jeana Ricks (Sgt. Nathan of USMC) and Kristi Groce (Gary); son, Roger Blackwell II; sisters, Anita Inman (Donny) and Pam Blackwell; brother, Waide Blackwell (Janice); granddaughter, Ansley Ricks, and several nieces and nephews.

Alta Cooper, 76, Rossville


Alta Pearl Hughes Cooper of Rossville died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008. She was 76.

She was born in Shell Mound, Tenn., to the late James E. and Ada Miller Hughes. She was a homemaker and had also worked as a clerk for Central Motor Express. She was a member of the Gospel Chapel in Chattanooga, Tenn. Often referred to as a saint for her endless patience, uncondi-tional kindness and her dedication to people, Pearl was a living example of God’s word.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Leon H. Cooper.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Morgan Dowdy of Dallas; son and daughter-in-law, Gary L. and Ethel Cooper of Knoxville, Tenn.; granddaughters, Jennifer Williams, Starr Cooper, Ashlea Cooper; and five great-grandchildren.

Mary Jane Brewer Madaris of Ringgold died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008. She was 69.

She was born April 11, 1939 to the late James B. and Pearlie N. Brewer in Elkmont, Ala. She was a secretary with Hutcheson Medical Center with 35 years of service, and was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Madaris Jr.; son, Roger Lee Madaris; sister, Mary Lombard; and brothers, Robert and Henry Brewer.

Survivors include her sons, Greg Madaris of Fort Oglethorpe, Bruce Madaris of Ringgold; sisters, Dorothy Kirk of Ringgold, and Robbie Hargrove of Ardmore, Ala.; brother, J.B. Brewer of Prospect, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Justin Madaris, Stephen Madaris and Shania Jane Rhamy.

Mamie Douglas, 76, High Point


Mamie Jo Douglas of High Point died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 at her home. She was 76.

She was born in Wildwood to the late John Landrum and Ola Beatrice (Pitts) Gwin. Jo was a lifelong member of Lookout Baptist Church in High Point.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Douglas; and her aunts, Lorena and Dee Pitts.

Herschel McKee, 60, Ooltewah, Tenn.


Herschel “Fluffy” Lee McKee, 60, of Ooltewah, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at a local hospital.

He was the son of the late Raymond and Jennie Bell McKee and was preceded in death by two sisters, Delores Ray McKee, Barbara Jean Leamon; and a granddaughter, Brie Harvill.

He was a member of Old Rugged Cross Baptist Church where he served as the director of music and as a Sunday school teacher.

He was the owner and operator of TN-GA Auto Auction in Ringgold and was an avid car collector and old car enthusiast. He was greatly loved by his family and friends.

Frances Tapp, 81, Fort Oglethorpe


Betty Frances “Pert” Tapp of Fort Oglethorpe died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, peacefully at home. She was 81.

She was a lifelong resident of Catoosa County and a longtime member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Chickamauga. She was a retired nurse dedicated to her patients with Dr. Garland Kinard.

J.C. Cross of Rossville died Sunday, Dec. 7.

Randall Johnson of Rossville died Sunday, Dec. 8, at his residence. He was 70.

A native of Pikeville, Tenn., he spent the past 30 years in the Rossville area and was a member of Lighthouse of the Word Church. Randall was an avid fisherman and was employed as a painter for many years.

Alisha Marie Knight of Ooltewah, Tenn., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was 21.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Tunnel Hill. She graduated from Ool-tewah High School in 2005 and was previously involved with the 4-H Club, gymnastics and swimming competitions. She was a wonderful mother of two beautiful children who will be missed by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her father, David Leon Knight; grandfather, Homer Knight; and grandmother, Margie Barbee.

Johnny Anderson, 81, Ringgold


Johnny Marion Anderson of Ringgold died Friday Dec. 5, 2008. He was 81.

He was the son of the late Eugene and Estelle Rose Anderson. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be greatly missed by many. He was a life long resident of the North Georgia area, a member of Midway Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Gweneth Bennett, 96, Fort Oglethorpe


Gweneth Lee Bennett of Fort Oglethorpe died Sunday, Dec. 7, at an area hospital. She was 96.

She was born Sept. 27, 1912 to Hubert and Dora Broom of Rossville. She was one of four children. Gweneth was the valedictorian of her high school class, a member of the National Honor Society, and Miss Rossville. She married Lindsay H. Bennett Sr. on Sept. 13, 1930. During her active life, she was a Red Cross volunteer during World War II, an officer in various PTA organizations, president of several area garden clubs, and a Gray Lady at Hutcheson Medical Center. She was a longtime member of McFarland Memorial Methodist Church in Rossville where she was active in the United Methodist Women, Society of Christian Service

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lindsay H. Bennett Sr., a north Georgia businessman.

Survivors include her sister, Dolly B. Cunningham; children, Elizabeth Diecke of Short Hills, N.J., and Lindsay H. Bennett Jr. of Ringgold; five grandchildren, Rick Diecke of Raleigh, N.C., Dietrich W. Diecke of Morristown, N.J., Hamilton Bennett of Dalton, Rodney H. Bennett of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Courtney H. Ruby Mae Hickey of Chattanooga, Tenn., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 from complications associated with a fall. She was 93.

She was a beautician and resident of East Lake for 50 years and later resided in Brainerd. She was an active member of East Lake Church of Christ for 25 years, followed by the East Ridge Church of Christ. Ruby taught Bible classes in her home in East Lake and at the Church of Christ. During her life, she made significant domestic and international charitable contributions both financially and with her crafts. Her focus was always helping those in need, both young and elderly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kemp C. Hickey Sr.; daughters, Virginia Biesack and Betty Russell.

Ida Mae Pasley died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008. She was 74.

She was born Dec. 23, 1934 in Chickamauga to the late John Henry and Betty Lou Shellman Pasley. She graduated from Hill High School in LaFayette in 1954. She was a housekeeper, a wonderful cook and a “Nannie” to many families in the Chickamauga area for over 50 years. She was a faithful member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Chickamauga since she was 17 years old. She taught Sunday school, was in charge of the youth department for 25 years and was an usher for 50 years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert Henry Pasley, Gordon Eugene Pasley; and a nephew, Robert Lamar Pasley.

Annie Laurie “Boots” Bowman Shields of Rock Spring died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008. She was 98.

She was born in Chattanooga, Tenn. She graduated from Ringgold High School and attended West Georgia College and graduated from Oglethorpe University. She taught school in Walker County for 40 years where she impacted the lives of many. During her tenure she represented North LaFayette Elementary twice as Walker County Teacher of the Year. Upon retiring from teaching, she was a charter member of the Walker County Retired Teachers which is now known as Retired Educators. She was a member of Peavine Baptist Church for more than 70 years, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of the LaFayette Crochet Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph “Bony” Shields; her parents, Oscar and Cora Eskew Bowman; sisters, Lucille Lansford, Alma Boyd, Frankie Parker; and brothers, Joe, Dan and Sam Bowman.

Connie Lou Henley Walker of East Ridge, Tenn., died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 at a local hospital. She was 63.

She lived most of her life in the Chattanooga area and she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away five days ago, John Walker; parents, David and Fleda Henley; and brother, David Henley.

Daris Wingo, 70, Flintstone


Daris Phillips Wingo of Flintstone died Friday, Dec. 5, 2008. She was 70.

She was born in Jackson County, Ala., on Dec. 3, 1938 to the late Robert and Alma Bailey Phillips. She lived in Flintstone since 1976 and was a member of Freehill Baptist Church in Rosalie, Ala. She retired from Town and Country Restaurant in 2004 after more than 30 years of service.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, James “Kent” Wingo; brother, Milford Phillips; sisters, Margie Shankles and Rebecca Smith; and great-granddaughter, Isabell Black.

George David Womble Sr., of East Ridge, Tenn., died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 at his residence. He was 63.

A native and lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, he was a diesel mechanic with G.W. Truck and Tire Service.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Odell Womble; and brother, Richard Lamar Womble.

Levoy Stephenson, 89, LaFayette


Levoy Stephenson of LaFayette died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008. He was 89.

He was the son of the late Tren T. and Gertrude Arnold Stephenson. He was a resident of Walker County most of his life, was a longtime member of LaFayette First Baptist Church, and a veteran of World War II.

Wesley Cook, 59, Chickamauga


Wesley Allen Cook of Chickamauga died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008. He was 59.

He was born May 20, 1949 in LaFayette to the late Wesley D. and Mary Asher Cook. He was a graduate of Gordon Lee High School in Chickamauga. He served his country in the 8th infantry of the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Dix N.J., and Camp Casey in Korea. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a current sheriff’s deputy for Walker County, working in court services.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Donna Lee Cook.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Patrick and Heather Cook of LaFayette, Jennifer Craven and Brion Frix of Covington; grandchildren, Alexus Cook, Austin Ramsey, Ellis and Lily Frix; sister, Jane Cook Clark; brother, Denny Cook; several nieces and nephews.

Essie Chambers Parker of Ringgold died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 at a local nursing home. She was 93.

Wesley Eugene Clark Sr. of LaFayette died Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at his home. He was 82.

He was a member of LaFayette First Baptist Church and Jerry Wilhelm Sunday class. He was instrumental in organizing ARC of Walker County, and was the treasury for 25 years. He served as a board member of ARC of Georgia for many years.

Linda Lee Goodman of Rossville died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at her residence. She was 61.

She was a graduate of Howland High School in Howland, Ohio, and attended Tennessee Temple University and had retired from the United States Postal Service. She loved reading, traveling, and e-mailing friends and family. Her nieces and nephews will always have fond memories of their Aunt Linda.

J.B. Melton, 84, Rossville


J.B. Wesley Melton of Rossville died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008. He was 84.

He was born in North Carolina to the late Lonnie W. and Pansy Randolph Melton. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Rossville. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge in Greenville, S.C., and also a Shriner. He was a former member of the Civil Air Patrol in Chattanooga, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Melton; his son, Dennis Melton, who gave his life in the Vietnam War; sister, Lizzie Lou Liles; brothers, Vernon, Elmer and Troy Melton.

James Richard Silvers of Chickamauga died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008. He was 70.

He was a lifelong resident of north Georgia with the exception of 15 years living in Hollywood, Fla. He served in the U.S. Army for six years where he was a Golden Gloves boxer and was a member of AA, and also served as the treasurer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Talmadge and Lottie Silvers.

Nancy Jane Jackson Callaway of Ringgold died Friday Nov. 28, 2008, at her home. She was 77.

A lifelong resident of Ringgold, she was retired from the Outreach Ministry of First Baptist Church of Ringgold, of which she was a member for 55 years, and taught the Lydia Sunday school class.
