The LaFayette Police and Fire Department, along with LaFayette Wal-Mart, partnered up to bring smiles to the faces of children in LaFayette who may need some help reaching for their Christmas wish list.

According to LaFayette Police detective Stacey Meeks, this year 16 children in LaFayette got to experience a $200 shopping spree at LaFayette Wal-Mart on Saturday, Dec. 19.

Meeks said six LaFayette police officers and six LaFayette fire officers were buddied up with the 16 children for a holiday shopping spree that delivered the goods.

The fire and police department works with schools in the LaFayette area to find children who may need some help having a bountiful Christmas and the departments work throughout the year to raise funds in partnership with the LaFayette Wal-Mart.

The charity program is partially funded by a grant from Wal-Mart, which is supplemented by a series of fund-raisers held by the department.

The children were taken to Wal-Mart in fire engines and patrol units to begin their shopping spree, as the offi-cers took a break from fighting crime and fires and got to show a little softer side of themselves and what it means to be in the holiday spirit.

Anyone who wants to make a monetary donation to help the Shop with a Cop/Fireman charity in LaFayette can contact the police department at (706) 639-1500 or mail a check payable to LPD Shop with a Cop/Fireman Pro-gram, LaFayette Public Safety Department, Attn: Officer Stacey Meeks, 208 North Main Street, LaFayette GA 30728.
