Firefighters responded to a call on First Street in LaFayette between midnight and 1 a.m. Wednesday. The house, located near the old LaFayette High School building, was unoccupied at the time.

According to Chief Tommy Freeman with the LaFayette Police, Fire and Safety Department, no one was injured and no property was damaged other than the house itself.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. A state fire investigator will be called in to investigate the scene. Arson has not yet been ruled out as the most likely cause.

Sounds like insurance fraud. Hard times causes people to do odd things to make ends meet. What better way to get out of a loan payment and get a few bucks in youre pocket. I have been seeing a lot of burned up new cars at the auction the last 2 years. Hardly ever see an old one burned up.

Why are there so many unoccupied houses burning in LaFayette? They all seem to burn in the wee hours of the morning. Sounds like arson or someone starting fires so the fire department will have something to do. Most of these houses are landmarks to a lot of people. I grew up in LaFayette and it hurts to see them burned down. Is there a firebug in LaFayette? Just wondering!

Of course it was arson! Unless the unoccupied houses on that side of town all commit suicide...
