COMMUNITY · Are you 16-to-21 years of age and need a GED and a job? The Georgia Northwestern Technical College Youth Success Academy program is accepting applications and conducting testing Sept. 17-28. The next GED class begins Oct. 1. If you’ve dropped out of high school and qualify for the program, you can earn your GED and receive other specialized services that will help you further your career training and help you find employment. COMMUNITY · Mr. Matthew L. Hipps, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Dalton State will speak on “Political Discourse” at the college’s annual Constitution Day program at 6 p.m., Monday, Sept. 17, in Goodroe Auditorium of Gignilliat Memorial Hall. Constitution Day recognizes the signing of the Constitution by the framers on Sept. 17, 1787.

COMMUNITY · Safe Kids Walker County will host free child safety seat checks from 2-6 p.m.Monday, Sept. 17, at the Rossville Fire Department on McFarland Avenue. Parents can bring their car, car seat and child to an event in their area. Certified child passenger safety technicians will be available to provide one-on-one “hands-on” help with installation. In addition, Safe Kids Buckle Up events will continue throughout the year. Parents and caregivers can locate an event in their community by visiting the Safe Kids website at safekids.org.

COMMUNITY · A Bariatric Support Group will meet from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Erlanger Chattanooga Lifestyle Center in Chattanooga. Bariatric Support Group meetings are for individuals scheduled to have Bariatric surgery or who have already had weight loss surgery. COMMUNITY · Childbirth Education will be taught from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at Erlanger East (Gunbarrel Road, Chattanooga). This childbirth education class is designed for expectant parents and taught by experienced OB nurses. These classes include stages of labor, relaxation and labor support techniques, hospital procedures, pain management options, after birth and home care for moms and in-hospital care for newborns. CHURCH · Hannah House is a benevolence service free to the community and is sponsored by Rock Spring Baptist Church. EDUCATION · The regular monthly meetings of the Walker County Board of Education will be held on the third Monday of each month, with the exception of the January, February, November and December meetings in 2012. COMMUNITY · Chattanooga Ronald McDonald House Charities is seeking volunteers to assist in the operation of the 23rd Annual Autumn Children’s Festival on October 6 and 7 at the Tennessee Riverpark. GOVERNMENT · The Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) Region One Planning Board will hold a town hall meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the Professional Building, 36 Mulberry Street, Suite 4, Ellijay, GA 30540. The purpose of this meeting is to identify unmet service needs in this region for people with developmental disabilities, serious mental illnesses, and for those who abuse substances. The general public, elected officials, plus those with special interests in mental health, developmental disabilities and addictive diseases are encouraged to attend. Information gathered from this meeting will be used to develop the state plan for services. The DBHDD Region One Planning Board includes 31 counties across north Georgia.
