According to elections supervisor Barbara Berry, by Monday morning, Oct. 29, 4,609 early and absentee ballots had been claimed.
These numbers include voters coming through the Walker County Courthouse, those who had cast their choices at one of the four satellite polling places, and approximately 1,000 absentee ballots sent out by postal mail. Elec-tions officials said they are averaging more than 200 voters per day at the courthouse alone.
Walker County has 32,447 registered voters.
Early voting opened Oct. 15 and runs through Friday, Nov. 2. It is available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Walker County Courthouse in LaFayette. Four satellite polling places throughout the county — one each in Rock Spring, Chickamauga, Rossville and Lookout Mountain — will also be open Monday, Oct. 29, through Friday, Nov. 2.
Election officials expressed their expectations that, should current voter rates continue, more than 7,000 early and absentee ballots would have been completed by election day on Nov. 6, thereby hopefully cutting down on the inevitable crowds.
