RINGGOLD - Spurred on by a ball-controlling ground game and a stingy defense, the Heritage Middle School Generals advanced to the North Georgia Athletic Conference football championship game next week with a 16-0 home victory over LaFayette on Thursday.

Heritage (7-1) ground out 201 yards rushing on 44 carries, and possessed the ball for 22:16 out of 32 minutes. The defense also played its part, surviving an early scoring threat and limiting the Ramblers to just three first downs 67 yards of total offense.

Despite enduring a pair of 16-minute mini games in a four-team playoff just two days earlier - including a double-overtime thriller in the final against Chattanooga Valley - LaFayette seized the early momentum, forcing a fumble on the third play from scrimmage. They recovered a second General fumble after a muffed punt to take possession at the Heritage 42-yard line.

A 21-yard pick-up by KaDarrin Ramsey on first down had the Ramblers in business, but the drive would bog down and the Heritage defense stopped LaFayette short on fourth down, giving the ball back to their offense with 3:07 left in the first quarter.

The Generals would counter with the only score of the first half on a 14-play, 84-yard, 7:45 drive, aided by two costly LaFayette third-down offside penalties. The first 67 yards came on the ground, but the final 17 came through the air as Corbee Wilson found Trent Kiniry uncovered in the end zone for the touchdown. Seth Roberson's conversion run gave the home team an 8-0 lead with 4:38 left before intermission.

LaFayette (3-5) got the ball to start the second half, picking up two quick first downs. But Tanner Nance stripped Ramsey of the ball and Daniel Jernigan recovered at the Heritage 44, ending what would be the Ramblers' only trip inside Generals' territory in the second half.

Heritage missed on a 33-yard field goal attempt with 5:21 left in the fourth quarter, but quickly forced a three-and-out by LaFayette, setting up the final TD drive of the afternoon.

The scoring march covered 58 yards and took eight plays, aided by another costly flag against the Ramblers, this one 15 yards for defensive pass interference. Luke Grant did the honors with 1:25 to play, sneaking in from three yards out while Roberson added the two-point conversion.

Roberson finished with 98 yards on 19 carries while Nance had 72 yards on 11 bruising carries. Wilson and Grant combined to go 2-of-3 in the air for 29 yards.

For LaFayette, Ramsey had 44 yards on nine rushes, but quarterback Logan Teasley completed just 3-of-12 passes for 14 yards.

Heritage will host Rossville (7-1) for the NGAC championship next Thursday. Rossville claimed a 22-6 semifinal win at Trion in a battle of the Bulldogs.
