According to the Walker County Sheriff’s Office:
Joseph Patrick Graham, 18, of Fern Avenue in Chattanooga and Joseph Tyler Cunningham, 19, of Ramey Hedges Access Road in Trenton were arrested on Jan. 13 for fleeing or attempting to elude from law enforcement officials on ATVs.
Deputy Stanfield was at a residence on Chattanooga Valley Road when he noticed two men riding ATVs in the roadway. Neither was wearing a helmet.
He pursued the pair for a quarter mile and stopped one of the two riders, verbally directing him to stay while he pursued the second man.
The officer reached speeds of more than 100 mph to catch the two drivers, which had easily exceeded the posted 35 mph on Rock Creek Road.
Stanfield followed the second ATV further and forced the driver to stop by “channeling his vehicle off of the roadway,” according to the incident report.
The man on the first ATV decided to flee while the deputy was occupied with his friend.
He was located a short time later, one mile from the original traffic stop, hiding in the basement of a friend’s home.
Graham faces one misdemeanor count for fleeing. Cunningham was charged with misdemeanor counts of fleeing, not wearing a helmet and not having insurance on either of the two ATVs.
Cunningham’s bond was set at $1,474 and Graham received a $768 bond. Both have since been released from jail.
